Same here, I think my original heat lamp has the dull emmiter bulb it came supplied with, and is over 15 years old, still goign strong for each whelping.  My "New" lamp is about 5 years old, and again still fitted with original bulb.  However, the lamps in my dog room, fitted with the infra-red "red" lamps, need regular replacements, although none ever exploded!
bye

Thanx for the replys, i feel more confidant in using them outside now, i have only ever used one inside the house because of the fear of the bulb shattering. Has anyone used the heat lamps that have the dimmer inbuilt that professes to cut costs, and if so have you used it with a dull emitter and still been effective enough to keep the dogs warm ?? i have a large concrete kennel that i want to heat day and night and looking at buying 4 to heat a large bed area so doing my home work first. Not that the cost will stop me from heating the dog bed but why pay more if you dont need to ?? Unless anyone can come up with an alternative safe option that doesnt cost an arm and a leg to run. somebody sugested heat from the bottom with greenhouse tube heaters but i was concerned about any water / urine coming in contact with it ( not that my dogs are in the habit of wetting their beds but you never know). Any ideas greatly welcomed. Changing the subject a little, i want smiley faces too, where do you get them ??

the 1st time in over 20 years of using heat lamps, i had one shatter this very week :( I wondered why the kennel was in darkness, went up to find broken glass everywhere in the beds. its the type I have always used.....with pig guard on it & all I can imagine is that the hounds, who were very wet at the time, must have had a shake & the water hit the hot bulb causing it to break.?
