Hi
I have a 3 month old male westie and really I have 2 questions here!
As a first-time owner I'm sort of feeling my way but he seems happy and healthy - only things that bother me are - he can't bear to be in another room with the door closed between us. He's fine at night and when we go out but whines like crazy to get in if I'm trying to wash the floor in another room with the door shut. Altho he gets lots of play and walks he whines all the time for us to play with him. The only thing stops him is a frozen stuffed kong!
The other is more delicate - I've noticed twice a certain part of his anatomy..er..enlarged. Is this usual at this age? we haven't decided whether to neuter him when he's old enough or not - don't know what to do for the best.
I'd be very grateful if you could give some advice. Will he grow out of the whining to play(even after you've just played for 2 hours non-stop??) and the whining to get into the room? He gets very excited if I've been out and now I'm ignoring him till he calms down to see if it helps. Thanks so much!

If you have played with a 12 week old puppy for 2 hours non stop I am not surprised he is whining, he must be overtired!

Perhaps it might be wise to think about not over stimulating him with fun as it will take him ages to calm down, ,much like a child before bed time when reading a book helps the brain get ready for rest.

He might whine less if you use a toddler gate instead of a door so that he can see you but still be separate.

Male dogs do get excited and the result is similar to an excited little boy.

You don't really need to decide about neutering yet for a while, concentrate on playing calm games and teaching him to be alone so that he grows up into a competent and confident adult that does not need to whine as he will have developed some self control with your careful training.

Ditto tohme. The baby gate is a great idea I think.

I have baby gates as well they are great especially if someone comes to the door, I can close the gate leading from the hall to living room, the dogs can still see me and whoever is at the door can see the dogs.  They are good when training puppies as well.
