My westie has had 1 season which was nearly 7 months ago. She is not showing signs of 2nd heat yet is this normal?
I am waiting for her next heat so i can have her neutered i have been advised by vet this is to be done in between heats approx 3 months from start of last heat.
I have just got another westie who is 9wks, this one a boy. Anyone else who has dog & bitch do you have them both done or just the bitch. I have heard it can be better to have dog done as well. WHat do you think? I should definately be getting Maggie done at next opportunity as if i don't get it done then i should think i will have problems with them both together in another 6 months even though ANgus will still only be young.
Another concern i have is that i have baby due end of Jan, if Maggie comes into season soon she will be going for op Feb just as coming home with baby & i want to make sure i can give her all care she needs afterwards. How long does it take for recovery & what is involved with the extra care she'll need afterwards. My mother lives on street behind me so i have plenty of help if needed. I also know it is for the best but i hate the thought of my poor little Maggie hating me for taking her to the vets for this to be done. I can't bear to think of her hurting. I do understand it is best though as not planning on breeding.
i know some of you will think iam mad getting another pup so close to baby but i am fully prepared for the hard work.

All bitches are different! It's perfectly normal, some bitches will go a year between seasons ( don't think that would be common in Westies though). Sod's Law is that they come into season at exactly the most inconvenient time for you :D Ideally, they should be spayed half way between seasons, but unless you have a bitch who is as regular as clockwork, the timing will always be a bit hit & miss, so a few weeks either way won;t make much difference. As for recovery - most bitches are fully active within a day or two - the problem is keeping them quiet while the wound heals. Others take a little longer, especially if they are a bit wimpish or the stitches are pulling. There's not that much care needed - most important is supervising them to make sure they don't start pulling the stitches out, trying to stop them getting dirty underneath (not easy with a low to the ground dog), checking they are going to the loo OK & just generally making sure they seem well. Don't worry, she won't hate you, she'll get over it quicker than you.
Up to you whether you get your dog done as well - there really is no need to get them both done though.
