Who would win a race over say 100yrds, between these unlikely competitiors..?
Bulldog
Yorkie
Old English Sheepdog
Dashchund
Beagle
Basset Hound
Bearded Collie
Jack Russell Terrier
I'd put a tenner on the Beagle, maybe..
I would definitely suggest the JRT would win. A JRT regularly chases my afghans round the park!

If there is a tripe stick at the end it would be a BASSET!

Jack Russell's are speedy little devils, but I know a Bearded collie who is like a galloping horse, so I too am going for the bearded. :-) You should do a 'who would come last too!'

Surely not the JRT..?
I appreciate that for their size, they are nippy, and as they were originally "ratters", their reactions are quick, but over anyt distance surely a longer legged dog would have the upper paw here..?
Anyway, I will do another one then..
Fastest From These..
Great Dane
German Shepard
Doberman
Red Setter
Afghan Hound
Whippet
Husky
Border Collie..
And when you are done with that one..
Stongest in a "pulling" competition..?
Rottweiller
Bull Terrier
Bulldog
Bullmastiff
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Newfounderland
Boxer..
Fastest - has to be the Whippet... ours is like lightening when she gets her speed up.
Pulling - the ridgeback?

Have whippets ever been raced at tracks in the way that their greyhound 'cousins'?

Pulling contest def has to be a NEWFIE!!! They are born for it! And for the fastest I wouldn't rule out a Yorkie...mine gets called scooter as he races round to greet you, he's like a dervish whirlwind! He tends to get VERY excited and has a mad ten minutes...I've never seen anything like it and we end up in stitches! :D

In a tug of war, I would place a tenner on my BT to outdo a Newfie, irrespective of the weight difference. As for the race, well, I think the whippet would have the edge, at least from the list I gave you.. :)

My Newfie, at six months old, was able to pull my OH (not a small man, by any means) off his feet...dread to think what she'll be capable of by the time she's fully grown. One of the things Newfie's were originally bred for was to pull fully laden carts so I wouldn't underestimate their ability in that department :)
Definatley a whippet for speed :)
