I know this has been covered many a time before, but would be grateful for specific advice.  I have 4 golden retrievers, ranging from 7 months to 7 years, and want to change them to a more natural diet.  My biggest problems are laziness and budget!  What would be a good way to start, without having to deal with lots of fruit and veg - I thought perhaps of the Anglian Meat Products.  If I fed like this, do you have any idea how much it would cost to feed each dog?

Thanks for your help.

If you have four dogs, and a BIG freezer, you can buy in bulk from AMP BUT its a £50 ish min order!!!

Its good stuff, but not as cheap as buying in bulk from a butcher or other raw food supplier (im sure someone else will tell you some suppliers all i can remember is Landywoods and ive emailed them TWICE now asking for min order details and they havent bothered to reply).

Local markets should supply chicken wings a lot cheaper than AMP ones, but again, proper raw food supplier is cheaper again.

Veg, again, market - i get a lot of the leafy greens for nowt each week, stuff they woulod chuck out as its a bit bruised etc.

Fish, i feed Glenryck pilchards in tomato sauce which is the cheapest ive found.

If you are hoping it will be cheaper than budget dog food, it wont.

However it IS possibly to get it a lot cheaper than the premium brand dog foods.

Get in touch with your local meat/poultry wholesalers via the yellow pages.

60lb of human graded chicken wings and carcases cost me around £26.  You do not have to use huge amounts of fruit and veg you could feed a banana/apple/avocado a day for example.

I just buy it,  bung in freezer, defrost and bung to dogs. Does not take much time.

Landywoods have a minimum order or £50.00. Will deliver once a month. My £50.00 worth lasts 2 months. I have 1 GSD. You need a large chest freezer to accomodate the volume. I have ordered on e-mail info@landywoods.co.uk and by phone 01889577772. Full range of food on web site www.landywoods.co.uk.

Hi tohme, Are the chicken wings and carcases frozen when you get them?  I tried to buy some chicken wings from a local butcher yesterday and he brought out this enormous frozen block which even he couldn't get apart :-) so there was very little point in me having them as I would only want 2 or 3 a day at the moment.

You can buy fresh or frozen from a poultry wholesaler, however as they ARE a wholesaler they would not sell you less than 1 box circa 30lbs.

A whole bunch of us buy from a particular source and therefore the prices are very low and the supplier will bag up specific numbers of wings/carcases to a bag, if you only want a couple then I suggest you buy them in kg packs from the supermarkets, approx 12 for £1.05

Sorry tohme, it was chicken necks I tried to get from the butcher.  I already get the wings from the local Tesco but the necks are harder to find.  Don't think my freezer space would accommodate 30lbs :D.  As you say, grouping together to buy in bulk is a good idea but unfortunately that option isn't available to me at the moment.
