Hi Folks

Can anyone suggest what food I should use for a podgy puppy.

She currently gets the pedigree puppy food (dry) and has about 3-4 handfuls twice a day, (which I thought was ok). But apparently she is a little overweight!! She gets walked regularly too, so she's not a couch potatoe!!

I know there are a lot of low fat foods for dogs on the market, but its just chosing the right one, or should I stick to what im using but cut it down. She is still only 10 months.

Your thoughts would be welcome.

Hi Natasha

I would say 2 handfuls of Puppy Food twice a day would be ample for a pup that has done all of her growing now, being 10 months old. You might also want to consider changing to the adult formula soon - I tend to change from puppy to adult formula at around 8 or 9 months as I don't think Cocker pups need the higher protein in the puppy food by this age (this could be why your bitch is a bit podgy :-) )

Thanks Jane

I am due to buy more at the w/end, so I'll get the pedigree adult.

It's also ok to disregard manufacturer's recomendations for the amounts of feeding your dog. I've found them always to be rather generous in their estimates. You might want to play around with how much you give her to determine her particular needs.

Personally, I think the manufacture has a vested interest for a dog to be over fed.... more dog food is purchased :D Sometimes, I wish they would make things a little easier & give the caloric rating along with the rest of the info. I think it would help in comparisons between brands. Just a thought anyway.
toodles
