Five weeks ago we added a puppy to our family. We have a five year old dog who at first snapped at the puppy but now everytime the puppy goes outside or is away from him, the older dog cries and barks which he has never done before! He never barks or cries! Also when the whole family are in the car, if one person leaves the car (but the puppy is still in the car) he cries then. Is he crying for the puppy or for the human? What can we do?

What breed of dog is he? It may be his herding instinct, he is letting you know that a member of his 'pack' has left and he is not happy. Dog or human. It is not just the female that nurtures the young a male can be just as protective. My stud dog is a stickler for bringing back a pup that has gone too far from sight, he will run and nudge it back or bark and then give it a good telling off. He will also stand guard and watch my bitches and cry if one is out of sight and fuss around until she's back. And mine is a gundog not even a herder!!
