Hi,  I am the proud new owner of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel puppy, who is 10 weeks old and absolutely gorgeous. Is there any advice that anybody can give me, about being an owner of this breed ?
- By melster122 Date 06.11.05 19:13 UTC
Welcome saffyozzy.

Congratulations.  What have you called your puppy and what colour is he?

I can't give you any advice because our cavalier puppy is still at the breeders as he is only 6 weeks old.  We pick him up in 2 weeks.  I am sure lots of people will be on soon as everyone is very helpful on this board.

Congratulations once again.

Hi, Her name is Saffy and she is a Blenheim.  What are you getting a dog or bitch, what colour, have you got any names yet !!
- By LucyD [gb] Date 06.11.05 19:51 UTC
Ah, I bet she's gorgeous. I've got a blenheim boy and a tricolour girl (and a Yankee!). There's pictures of them on my site, feel free to send me a pic of your girl! I would advise if you haven't already, getting a few books on the breed, such as the Petlove CKCS book by Juliette Cunliffe, which is more general ownership things, and a couple of more specific breed books like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels today by Sheila Smith or The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel by Margaret Workman. The Book of the Bitch is also invaluable for any bitch owner whether or not you plan ever to breed. My girl is lovely, very eager to please, and almost TOO closely bonded with me - she throws a yappy tantrum if I'm not paying her enough attention, and trips me up in the park. My boy is more independent - he loves getting cuddles from me on the sofa, but in the park he's a speck on the horizon half the time, and he was nearly 2 before we had a fairly reliable recall!! They are fantastic dogs, stubborn and selectively deaf at times, but so loving and affectionate. They're small enough to pick up and cuddle, but sturdy enough to go for proper hill walks - just right really! Watch out with bigger dogs though, they can scare a Cav without meaning to - and of course if yours is a typical friendly Cavalier she will have no concept of her tiny size! Have fun with her! :-)

- By saffyozzy [gb] Date 06.11.05 20:17 UTC
Hi, I dont think i will go into showing, even though shes gorgeous !!!!
- By cavalierz [gb] Date 06.11.05 20:25 UTC
You never know ey??? :-D
- By cavalierz [gb] Date 06.11.05 20:30 UTC
Its real fun to show! :-D
- By saffyozzy [gb] Date 06.11.05 20:30 UTC
I don't think i have the right temperment for showing, i hate losing.  I have never entered my children in any sort of competition, because I obviously think they are the most gorgeous children in the world, and wouldnt understand if nobody else did, i think i would be the same way with Saffy !!!!!! Oh  a mothers love !!!!!

Hi there.  We are getting a Blenheim too and are thinking of calling him Flynn at the moment.  I am so excited my husband says I am unbearable to live with LOL
- By saffyozzy [gb] Date 06.11.05 21:06 UTC
Flynn, thats a nice name.  We were going to have Ozzy if we got a boy, hence my user name !!
- By melster122 Date 06.11.05 21:10 UTC
I like both the names Saffy and Ozzy.  If we had chosen a girl I think we were going to call her Millie (as in Charles and Camilla).  We looked at quite a few royal names but nothing seemed to fit.  Who knows when we get him home we might callhim something completely different LOL

Gosh I can't wait to get ours.  Funnily enough we are split between the names Harvey and Flynn.  We love both names so much so much so that we used to have a cat called Harvey so am not sure we can use it again.  A man up the road has a dog called Captain.  He has had 4 dogs and they have all been Captain LOL

When do you get him hun? He will be worth the wait!! I also liked the name Bailey - (my favourite tipple!!!)  but he just looks like a Harvey! Would you like a piccy??

Yes please I would love a piccy.  We should be picking him up on the 20th if all goes well.  Bailey is a cool name too.  Have you found toilet training easy or not?  We have bought everything we need for Flynn and are off Discover Dog on Saturday.  I have told my hubby to bring his credit cards LOL
- By LucyD [gb] Date 07.11.05 22:19 UTC
I'd love pics of all Cavaliers please!!! You can pm them to me by clicking on my username on this site. Look forward to seeing all the lovely babies! And watch out if you're thinking of starting showing, it's really addictive! I hate losing too! :-D I'll be at Discover Dogs too on Saturday, can't wait!
- By luvhandles Date 07.11.05 22:30 UTC
Do you have msn? If you add me garyschick@hotmail.co.uk I will send piccies via there. Toilet training is  getting better - we've only had him for 1 week. I would say forget about paper training or the puppy pads and go straight to outdoor training, I used a pad at the back door and he now thinks that he can go on anything that resembles a mat or rug but won't go on the wooden floors......confused him I think! He has never poo'd indoors just piddles wherever he pleases. We have a little crate for overnight and only ever do es 1 little wee on the paper area but I'm gonna start getting up at 3am to take him outdoors so that I can completely do away with paper.
- By melster122 Date 07.11.05 22:36 UTC
Sorry don't have msn as when we did the computer kept crashing.  Could never work out why.  I am planning on not using paper and putting him outside every 45 minutes to an hour during the day and then see how it goes during the night.  It is so exciting just like having a new baby but even better.
