Please could you just answer my questions.
1) As a dog walker do you have to be fully insured and is narp the only insurance company that can insure for this job.
2) How many dogs should you take max. on one walk at a time.
3) what would happen if you took over the max. number of dogs would you still be insured? (say with narp insurance).

Hi there,

Yes you definitely need to be insured (in fact, ALL of us need 3rd party liability insurance). The law as it stands is that the person who has custody of the dog (not necessarily the owner) is responsible for that dog's actions. So if the dog knocks somebody over and they inuure themselves, then you would be liable. So, yes, please protect yourself and get 3rd party liability insurance.

There are a few insurance companies that do this Pet Business Insurance, NFU, Cliverton and others.

With regards to how many you walk, that is something you will need to ask your insurers. I don't know of any laws that govern this specifically. You also need to speak to your dog warden and as him/her these questions.

All the best,
Patty

Hello Guest,

I started up as a Dog-walker in September this year, and here is some info for you.

1) Yes, you do need 3rd party public liability insurance, mine is done through Cliverton, I have always found them very helpfull.

2)Different companies will set down different numbers of dogs that you can take out together, mine is 6. (Although as many of mine have behavioural 'issues', they are walked one at a time!)

3)In my policy, the dogs have to be kept on a lead/long line/flexi lead, unless the owners have given me permission, in writing, that I can let them off the lead.

Hope this helps a bit, you are welcome to pm me if you need any further details.

Ali :)
