Topic Dog Boards / General / Cute pups but how will they grow?

Was at the Vets today, and a lady brought in 2 lovely, large pups.  Great condition, and obviously happy, healthy pups, jsut 10 weeks old and getting 2nd injections.  They were a gorgeous red colour, with little white socks, some white on face, and a sort of deep pile, plush coat.  At first glance they looked ot be Akits, but coats very wrong!  On talking to receptionist and the owner the breeding came out - they had an Akita sire and a Sha-pei x staffi mum!  I admired them, and commented that the owner looked like she would be kept busy with some pretty serious training, I got a sunny smile back, as she told me she coudl not wait to get them out on the leads, as they were already spending all there time "fun fighting" in the garden!

I smiled back, swallowed and left - how on earth can a complete novice hope to cope with 1, let alone 2 pups who are likely to be so demanding, and require such very careful training.  I just see a disaster waiting to happen!
bye

I dispair of situations like that :(  I saw an advert for Husky x Akita x GSD pups that were 'good with children' the other day.......

The new in dog round here with the druggys and trouble makers is Sha-Pei x Staffy.   One off the lead (as most are round here) came charging after my JR and I had to hold him in the air while this dog leapt snarling trying to grab him.
I got home and was shaking like a leaf.   The owners response was that you have to let dogs be dogs.

There's an answer to that Bevb.

"and owners have to be owners!"   sounds like the dog warden could do visiting the owner to 'remind them of their responsibilities' ;)

of course there is the other answer, " I'll bring the (insert any dog bigger and more aggressive than they have) round tomorrow then shall I?"  :D  should wipe the smile off!

That is a BAD mix. I own shar-pei and know and love many staffies, but I can imagine the type of pei they are using in the cross. Some shar-pei can be extremely 'game' and aggressive. So combine that and their independent nature with the tenacity of a staffie and you're asking for trouble. As for crossing that cross with an Akita - are they deliberately crossbreeding to create an aggressive, unpredictable dog? They would need to be in highly experienced hands to be on the right track as nice pets, but I suspect they are attractive to anybody but the right people.

One particular woman locally used to deliberately breed shar-pei x rottweillers and they were well known at the vets my friend used to work for. She lost count of the ones that came in with aggression and temperament issues. I know you can't judge an entire breed as there will always the exception, but you can be playing with fire crossbreeding like that.

This is what worried me!  And this lady was a complete novice, jsut hope the vets can steer her in the right direction about training, but the chances of her being able to manage with 2 of them!

I think 2 pups together for a novice owner is bad enough, but that mix is just asking for trouble!
