Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / dog eating shoes
- By fletchers [in] Date 03.11.05 17:55 UTC
hi, new here and need some advice. our dog is 18 months and still distroying things, especially shoes whenever we leave him alone.
he even knows when hes been naughty as he hides when he hears us come home, we have tried ignoring bad behaviour, rewarding good. going out for 2 mins then coming back in and getting the length of time longer. sometimes he is good and doesnt eat anything, but most of the time he cant help it, we leave him in the dining room / kitchen so he has plenty of space and move everything out of the way so hes not tempted but then he goes for wires.
any advice at all we would be most grateful.
he is a cross between a border terrier and a spaniel and the most adoring dog in the world, he brings us so much joy, its just this 1 thing......... 2 actually ( he hates walking with a lead, always pulling)
many thanks, benjis frustrated mummy xxxx

Firstly don't leave anything out you don't want chewing ;) :D

Secondly leave him with a kong as that will keep him occupied for a while especially if it has been in the freezer :)

Firstly, a dog doesn't 'know it's done wrong', it just has a feeling that you are going to be angry if you come in. After all, that is what you have been teaching him, isn't it? ;) You come in, see whatever has been chewed and get angry. He doesn't realise that it's because he got bored and chewed something.

In order to stop him chewing you will be better giving something that he is allowed to chew and make sure that everything else is out of reach. OR get him a crate and restrict his movements when you are out. I've had chewers so I know how frustrating it can be. In fact I came home yesterday to find one of my daughter's dolls in the hallway, minus it's hands and feet. :D It wasn't the dog that got shouted at, but my daughter

if it makes u feel better, i got home today and my pup had eaten my slipper which i only got YESTERDAY!!! she has never touched my old ones so never thought about hiding the new ones!!!

It's when you have just bought a very expensive pair of leather shoes that you really need to hide from the chewer. I didn't :D I'd only had the shoes for 3 days ;) That's when you learn NOT to leave things lying around. :)

LOL Lindylou

My daughter knows "if it on the floor it belongs to the dogs" - its a great way to get her to clear up.

She learnt her lesson whilst playing with two handless, footless Barbie dolls!!!

You do learn by your very expensive mistakes  :D :D

Good excuse to buy some more 'new' shoes though :p :p

I treated myself to a lovely new pair of shoes one Friday afternoon and wore the to go out on the Saturday night. Puppy chewed them on the Sunday  OH's slippers were her latest victim just yesterday. My boy made short work of a gorgeous pair of flip-flops I bought on my last trip to New York (I almost cried about those) and a nice pair from Dune. He obviously has discerning tastes as he never goes for the cheap ones

I actually am starting to think that the OH is feeding my shoes to the dogs as he says that I have far too many pairs. Surely you can never have too many shoes!! :D Men!!! He just doesn't understand that I need all 120 (ish) pairs.....

Sounds like a Craig David song :p :p

Don't mention flip flops to me as a very sore subject this summer  Dudley has chewed her way through three pairs this summer :)
I also have the 'OH feeding the shoes to the dog' theory going here as it always seems to be my shoes  Then OH pointed out it may have something to do with the fact I am always leaving loads of pairs of shoes all over the house where as he alway puts his away  :D :D

Hey same here, she always gose for my shoes never his (his feet must be too smelly). And the first thing to go with both dogs have been those 'all terrain' open sandles (grr)

Exactly, myself and husband went away this weekend and left my boys at home with my dog.  They left my bedroom door open and he chewed my new loafers, I was so angry with my boys as it wasn't my dogs fault.  We always put our shoes away.  If we are about not a problem with shoes lying around but if we go out he will have a chew of a shoe.

its funny you should say the slippers your dog chewed was new , as the ones he has destroyed have all been new ones of mine, typical huh, he hardly does it now, im just worried he mightr bite an electric wire, as he has had the phone wire and also internet wire x
thanks for all the replies xx

If you're concerned that he might chew something dangerous, it's your responsibility to make sure he can't get to it, just as it would be your responsibility to make sure your toddler couldn't get to an open fire, a boiling kettle or a carving knife. If you leave him unattended, make sure he's in a safe place.

Its a dogs job to eat shoes! :D they cant help it! If you leave shoes out its fair game, lock them away in future!

My kids learnt to be much tidier once the puppy turned up :D :D  They're rooms are a mess but they shut they're doors now with their belongings inside :D
