Just personally not a breed for me.  I do like them as a breed just there's some breeds I will not live with.  I'm sure there are breeds you couldn't live with.

My first introduction into RR's was at ringcraft, someone started coming but then couldn't make the time so had private lessons before the main ringcraft started.  I would go with my grandad and hold onto this RR when my grandad and the owner set up the Mats.  A stunning dog (he went onto win loads!) that pulled me over! :D

I haven't got anything against the breed, just wouldn't own one.  I much prefer my gundogs TBH

o.k fair point, wasn't getting at you just curious as you seemed so definate. ridgebacks aren't so different in looks to some gundogs so i can see why you appreciate them. my boyfriend loves labs and goldens but we have to agree to differ otherwise it could get nasty!

Don't worry, didn't take it as you were getting at me!!! :D  We are all open to our opinions!  I can see you think the world of your RR's Maybe if I did own one I would change my mind but wouldn't give it a chance...I love cuddling up on the sofa with my setters!!! :D

what are they like to own?  I love the look of them, very fine dogs. Do they need a strong owner?

I think they are a lovely breed, quite a few round here actually. I have a friend who breeds them. A bit too big for me though.

i'm glad to see so many of you appreciate how lovely looking RR's are. as for their personality i always describe them as similar in temperament to GSD's. i had a GSD before that sadly died and i couldn't face having another straight away, so i thought a Ridgeback would be 'the same but different'. they are v.intelligent (see  comments on my other ridgeback post!) and quick to learn but also affectionate more openly so than my GSD. same qualities as far as guarding and strangers go and very good with children. i have two children 3 and 6months and they are brilliant. my little boy leads mungo (whos 29" and 13 months old) around the garden and pretends that he's his car!
The main difference between RR and GSD is that the RR's are less 'busy' in the house. they don't need constant stimulation and are quite happy to sleep all day as long as they know you are near. that being said they are always ready and willing to go for a walk and can go for miles. this leads me on to my next point, they hate rain and cold weather (not good in cornwall where it never stops raining!) and would much rather be in by the fire. Gracie will only sit on the picnic table if it's wet and Mungo on our labrador!
they are big but thats what i like and they are strong so you need to get on top of lead training early but we have had no problems with getting them to come back on a walk as we were told to expect.
next time you see one ask it's owner and i bet they say the same as me!

My old boss had a R R who was a great dog she lived to a ripe old age of 15 she had the run of the pub greeted customers but also knew who her owner was and protected him till the end it was a sad day when she died but after 6mths of grieving my ex-boss went out and bought another R R i think they are a great bred but very rare his new R R is following in the memory of Red
