We have just got a Border terrier puppy, she is only 9 weeks old so not yet going to be going out for walks, but I want to get a collar and lead now to get her used to it. What is the best type to go for, and are the retractable ones ok for a puppy? appreciate any advice.
I would not use a retractable lead for a puppy as you will want to teach them to walk nicely at your side to start with, not easy on a retractable, also can be very dangerous near roads if not locked on properly.
I would go with the softer lighter weight collars and leads to start with. :)
A retractable lead is a useful piece of kit, but I would never use one for any dog when walking near roads, only in open areas where you can't let them off.
I would just buy a soft nylon collar which are adjustable and a nylon lead.
These are strong yet light for the pup to get used to.
Hello all,
Can I just add that I always advise people to buy collars with buckles rather than clips, although for a pup this would be ok. I see lots of dogs coming training that have good quality, strong collars, fastened with quick release clips, - the collar is only as strong as its weakest point! eg the plastic clip.
I heard of one near miss a while ago when someone's dog suddenly went for a small furry, and broke the clip, the collar fell off and hey presto, one loose dog with no tag details on!
Just a thought!
Good luck with the new pup.
Ali :)

IMHO retractable leads should only be used with ordinary harnesses, not collars or 'no pull' type harnesses.
