Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Feeding puppies - confused!

After reading lots of posts on here, i am now very confused! It seems to me that puppy should not be having 2 milky meals a day as well as the two meat based. Does this then mean that pup should be having the daily ration of food - meat meal - split into rations and a bit given at every meal? Would pup not get bored? Is there anything else you can feed to give a bit of variety?

It depends what you feed. The 'old-fashioned' method, using a protein source and plain biscuit, allowed for variety in the protein - beef, lamb, tripe, chicken, fish. Pups of most breeds were given three-quarters of an ounce of food (equal volume protein and biscuit) per pound of bodyweight, split into several meals. This involves regular weighing of your puppy!

You could replace one or two of these meals with an equivalent portion of a good quality modern complete, to be sure the pup was getting a good variety and the right vitamins and minerals.

Dogs don't tend to get bored (like we would eating the same thing) they do like routine, I have fed my boy the same food, flavour since we brought him home at 8 weeks and he is now 19 weeks. He certainly isn't bored and can't wait for the next bowl to be put down :-)
Feeding a complete meal is alot easier (knowing they are getting the right balance of everything) but it is up to the individual dog as some like it and some don't!
