Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Hand Stripping - Thanks for info!

I recently asked if any of you could give me information on hand stripping my 7 month old cocker who I have had clipped.  I would like to thank you all for your advice.  Hopefully I can let her coat grow and in time have her hand stripped.  Her hair doesn't really come out and thats why I thought it would be painful.  It was never explained to me at the parlour that it was the dead hair that was pulled out!  Is there anyone who lives in the West Midlands who has a Cocker who can hand strip and teach me?

It will do when it's ready!!  It'll start to stick up instead of lying flat and be pale at the ends.  I would have dogs in every 8 weeks and would roll the coat, pulling maybe about 20% of the coat at any one time.  So the dogs would always look tidy - not very hairy like a lavatory brush one week and bald like a sausage with 4 legs when they've been shaved the next! :(

It was never explained to me at the parlour that it was the dead hair that was pulled out!
It would appear by the number of owners who are having difficulty finding a good groomer, and the comments from some working groomers, that many don't have any idea of the correct way to handle the coats of many popular breeds!  I hope that you can find someone in your area to help you. :)

I wouldn't like to say for certain as we've not been taught clipping or stripping yet, but I get the impression from my friend who has been through the same grooming course as I've just started, that they pretty much tell you to clip instead of stripping because it's quicker and easier, and they don't care about the correct coat texture!!

Sounds about right to me Lucy! :(
Would that be a general college that runs a grooming course as opposed to a grooming training school?  That has always been my experience which is why I always suggest that people wanting to learn go to a proper training school.
The problem that I have is that it isn't quicker and easier to clip, bath and dry, as opposed to chalk and strip (and NOT bath and dry, because the chalk cleans the coat) if the coat is rolled on an 8 week appointment!

I'm sure everyone was glad to help :)

Try contacting a breed club and ask if they can put you in touch with a breeder in the area who can help you learn :)

Good luck.
