Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Underweight Dobe pup

I've just read a post by a guest on the visitors questions on their underweight 12 week old puppy and I could have written it myself because I myself have the exact same problem.

I have a male 12 week old Dobe puppy, who is also being fed on Nature Diet and i have noticed this past two weeks that his ribs really stick out.  He is eating really well so i'm at a loss.  I have just weighed him today and he now weights 9.5kg.

He's been checked over by my vet and he's been declared as fit & healthy, worming is also up to date.

Any idea's??

I know how you feel.  My male Dobe is 2 and still resembles a Greyhound but the vets have given him the all clear so I am going by what they say.  I have stuggled to get and keep weight on him since he was a puppy and have now given up worrying.  I would go by what your vets says.

Thinking back one thing that did put a bit of weight on my boy was sausages and suet, you could also try 'Satin Balls' as this works for some dogs.

PM me your email address

Our pup was the same & at 24 wks is still slim. I used to worry an awful lot, changed his food & increased it. No diarrhoea, vomiting or other concerns, full of life, shiney coat etc - hope that as he matures he will 'fill out' a bit more. As long as he's not malnourished I'd rather he was a bit lean than overweight.

Thank you for your replys, it's really appreciated:-))

Liisa - i've sent you a PM with my email address.

I have had Dobes previously, but i have never had this problem before, if anything i've always had to watch their weight because they would eat & eat if i allowed them to!

I was just wondering if feeding Nature Diet could be the root of the problem, especially now since reading how the guest post has the exact same problem. This is the first time i have fed a dobe on Nature Diet - previously i have always fed a dry complete food.

I reared a litter on Naturediet and also kept one of the pups. Mum is also fed on ND, as are all my adult dogs. As far as pups go I would always prefer to see a slightly lean pup (not really thin) than a roly-poly pup anyday. I think it is better for their joints and general development, slow and steady rather than the rapid growth you often see.

How much, and how many meals a day is your pup on?
