Hi my name is Ryan' i have got a GSD 11weeks old we have had him from 8 weeks old he was a little skinny when we got him and his poo's were a bit runny so i took him to the vets and he put him on the ID science plan food and now i am starting to introduce tha ID dried food but he still has not had a normal poo. I can't get his injections yet because of this but i no he needs to be out getting use to other dogs and people.
Can anyone suggest what i can do next' he has nearly doubled in weight he looks great now ' full of life acting like a puppy should he just needs to get out now.
Someone suggest Tree Barks Powder?

Hi Ryan

Sometimes when a pup eats more than it needs its gets the runs as it passes through without being absorbed.  Try reducing the amount you are feeding him, as he is growing well and is full of life I would suggest you halve the amount you feed each meal time for 48 hours then let us know how his poo's are doing.  Hopefully, if there is no medical reason for them to be runny then they will have firmed up and you can gradually increase it again.

The tree barks powder is probably slippery elm but I would try reducing his food first.  You have to be a bit hard hearted sometimes with dogs so it is better that you learn how to do this while he is still very young and does not have you fully trained yet :D

Is anyone in the family giving him food between meals or anything extra?

Hi Kerioak, I am the author of the post I didnt realise that my wife had registered so can now reply to you under her user name, thank you for your advice our pup Reggie has had the runs from day one so we know the problem isn't him being fed too much he has a quarter of a tin of hill prescription wet food mixed with a small handful of hills prescription dry food four times a day, this is how much the vet said to give him, we are not giving him any extra treats or food in between and the runs have slowly cleared up and now resembles a cow pat, maybe it will take a while and maybe another trip to the vets would be a good idea and see what they suggest, as i said before he seems fine but we feel he should be going out and socialising but the vets wont give him any vaccinations until he forms a proper 'firm poo' and not a cow pat! should we be worrying that he is not going out yet? he will be 11 wks this week and hasn't been out yet except to the vets.

Hi,

Have you tried giving him a little Bio Yoghurt?  a few teaspoons full on his food for a day or so can often work wonders ;) ;)

Oh! and have you checked he's not eating anything in the garden?  Some plants can cause diarrhoea if chewed and some are quite poisonous ;)

The other thing is to take a sample to the vet for testing to rule out campolybacter (or however it is spelt) although not every sample will show up the bug

You could also try bottled or boiled water instead of tap water in case he has a problem with your water supply.

HI RYAN
THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS TAKE HIM OFF SCIENCE PLAN FOOD. I AM A GSD BREEDER AND I DONT NO OF ONE PERSON TO TRY THIS COMPLETE FOOD AND HAD GOOD RESULTS. THEIR CANED FOOD FOR A SHORT TERM PROBLEM SEEMS OK BUT THE COMPLETE IS A NO NO FOR GSDS.
GO TO A GOOD PET STORE AND BUY A GOOD QUALITY COMPLETE FOOD. I MYSELF USE PRO PLAN PURINA, FOR ADULTS AND PUPS AND IT IS GREAT AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS.  ANOTHER GOOD FOOD BELIEVE IT OR NOT IS PETS AT HOMES OWN MAKE OF FOOD THE CONTENTS OF THE FOOD ARE AS GOOD AS PRO PLAN. IF YOU FEEL THAT HE WILL NOT EAT THE FOOD WITHOUT SOMETHING IN IT TRY JUST A SMALL AMOUNT OF TINNED BUTCHERS TRIPE JUST TO ENCOURAGE HIM TO EAT, BUT REALY HE SHOULD HAVE THE FOOD ALONE.
GOOD LUCK

Hi Ryan, i also have a GSD, he is 2 now!, anyway when we got him he was just as you have described... we took him to the vets, sat up all night worrying!! followed him around for days with a puppy training mat(trying to save the carpets - lol)... we ended up trying almost every food on the market and now we have settled on Burns. Roman (the dog) can't eat ANY tinned food at all, else it's 1 in and 10 out! We also buy him Bio Live Yogurt and give him a spoonfull every 2 days, this seems to help and he likes it, I also cooked up extra veg when I do dinner and he has these with his dry food for a bit of variety (I don't add salt when cooking) Have also found that the only treats thatsuit his tummy are gravy bones and plain Bonio.  Hope this helps to reasure you that all is well, cos like Reggie, Roman was a 'proper puppy' full of fun and games and very cheeky, just the upset tummy that seemed to worry us more than him. Goodluck.

Thank you so much for all your replies and advice, we spoke to a GSD breeder last week and she advised us to give Reggie one meal of bio yoghurt with 5mls of tree barks powder mixed in with it and a little honey to taste which he really enjoyed, and then add the tree barks powder to his regular food for seven days we have been doing this since friday and today he had his first 'solid poo' we were so pleased we were almost jumping for joy - lol as we have been so worried about him, we were also told that once he is having 'solid poos' without the tree barks powder we can then introduce a new dog food but quite honestly we have been advised to try so many that we are not sure which one to give him.
Now we just need to get over a new problem of play biting which he does all the time we cant even stroke him now without him biting us! any advice how to ease this problem until he is well enough to have his inocculations and go to puppy classes would be great
Thank you
