Hi

I have seen a golden bitch cocker spaniel puppy that I am keen to get, however I keep hearing negative things about them since , they can be nipping and are very hyper and need a lot of attention.

I have 3 children 14,12 and 9 a reasonable garden and good walks nearby.  Although rarely out the house for a whole day I will need to leave her sometimes for several hours.  i thought she would be a good family dog, what do people think, is there a better breed, i don't want a dog that sheds hair as my son isn't good with that.

A cocker spaniel would be the perfect family pet for you, your family and your set up.  They are very much a dog and people friendly breed. I take it you are looking at the show cocker as your family pet, there is also the working cocker (which has a higher energy level.) Bare in mind all puppies are going to be happy, boucy, bundles of joy (who poop and wee a lot too) they chew and can nip, you will find this with all pups of all breeds.

In fact a family I know, told me of a website which matches you with your perfect dog, and the cocker spaniel came out as their ideal family breed.  Anyone know this site?

They are great family dogs, I hope that you get her! :-)

If you want a non-shedding breed, then a Cocker is not for you I'm afraid. Cockers do moult, some more than others, but they all shed to some extent (that's why I've gone through several Dysons :D).

If you want to get a good picture of what living with a Cocker is like, have a read HERE. If you do decide a Cocker is for you, then make sure you buy from a reputable breeder who does all the recommended health-screening tests (eye testing and/or hip scoring) and will provide help & advice after you take home your puppy for as long as you need it.

Hmm, tempting, a Cocker forum! Is that just for English Cockers or are Yankee owners allowed? :-)

I think there are a couple of Yankee owners on there (like Fiona) but mostly it's English Cockers :-)
