On Wednesday, I was walking my 8 month Akita in the park, when of lead a labrador decided to fight him, I put my puppy back on leash only for the owner of the labrador to just stand there and watch as I tried to keep dogs apart having my hand brusied/bitten by the Labrador in process, a member of the public pulled the labrador away fortunetly!
I reported matter to police as I got injured by the lab, reporting also to the dog warden, interesting though, when I mentioned what dogs were involved the tone changed, he being a Labrador owner.......... I was advised to not walk my dog near the lab? he suggested I muzzled my dog as a precaution as "it may dislike labs after attack"

Here is the outcome My vets bill for my injured Akitas eye, keep away from the labrador, muzzle my dog? plus I was the injured by other dog and had to get Tetanus jab

Fair I think not, why do people seem to think that certain breeds are safe? maybe beacuse the incidents involved with them are simply not reported?

You were totally the victim in this case and if the lab has bitten you I would demand that the police follow it up.
The only thing that concerns me is that you had your Akita off the lead. I have a number of friends who have Akitas and the two things which they said to me is that they can't be trusted off a lead and generally they won't start a fight but they will finish one.
I'm not at all saying you were at fault here. You certainly have been treated appallingly, it's just that if your dog did  have a go are you really going to be able to stop them (being an average of 8-9 stone).
You shouldn't have to muzzle your dog. Your dog at the end of the day did no wrong and credit to his temparement he didn't attack this lab that provoked him. As for this useless dog warden I would go above his head. His behaviour is disgusting. If this had been a child bit, it would be been dealt with a lot more seriously.
I can't believe the owner just stood there and did nothing. Did the other person who pulled the lab off give you any details so they can act as a withness. If a dog bites a person the police have a duty to follow the complaint up.
Keep your chin up and I hope you get passed this horrible experience. I'm sure it has left you shaken.

Thanks for your response, I am still awaiting police feedback, yes the person who pulled the dog off is someone I know name and address of but the police said that a witness has to be asked to provide info, Im afraid that she may not want to get involved......... your words are much apprciated as it does get you down dealing with these people.

Good luck with your complaint I hope it is followed through properly.

Labs will get this kind of reaction - they can never be aggressive must have been the other dogs fault.

I have experienced from the other side, I have Labs and most people run over to them or worse parents send their kids over - without asking! Especially when it was just Ben i owned.  He wouldnt bite but these parents dont know that.

People dont seem to understand a lab is a dog that can be aggressive.  Ben doesnt like white boxers and if sees one he will get tense and doesnt appreciate it when they just run over to him "to play".  He also doesnt like Rotties (this is my fault) and if I am with him he becomes very aggressive growls and always goes inbetween me and the rottie.  yet if im not there he is ok with the ones that live accross from my Gran.  So Labs can be aggressive.

(ps my fault because when he was a pup still getting carried about we seen a rottie on a bus just sprawled and you had to get past it to get onto the bus properly and i froze when i seen it.  Then we seen another one about 2 years later and Ben startedd barking at it!)

Just wanted to say I had almost exactly the same situation as you - Lab attacked my 8 mth old Akita, completely unprovoked - the dog actually turned round & chased after us when we had passed him. My boy was on the lead, I didn't get bitten, didn't let go of the lead either but gave my lad as much freedom as I could to protect himself. I didn't bother reporting it - wouldn't have dared after the language I subjected his owner to :o (didn't know I knew such words  Just wanted to warn you that Akitas are like elephants they never forget ! 7 yrs later & he's ready for an attack from any all black, Lab sized dog he sees. No matter how good your Akita is, please don't let him off the lead where there's any chance he'll across other males.
While I agree Labs can be dog aggressive, I think if you intervene in a dog fight you ARE likely to get bitten & it's not always fair to label a dog as "human aggressive" in that situation. I've been bitten trying to seperate a one of my dogs & a terrier who was in "fighting-mad" mode & am sure she didn't even realise she's bitten me, she was just "lashing out". The reaction of the dog warden is sadly something Akita/Staffy/GSD etc owners have to put with at the moment until they are shown that the reputation of the dogs isn't warranted & the only way to do that is by being a responsible owner (which I'm sure you are :) )

I can't believe the owner didn't stop their dog, that's disgusting!! And you should continue to complain to the police and anyone else until something satisfactory is done.

I can understand the idea - generally, a dog like an Akita will be frowned on as they are considered a more "aggressive" breed (around here, anyway) and indeed Dad had a run-in with an off-lead Akita that got our Collie/Alsatian by the neck - Sam being Sam, he wouldn't fight back, just tried to submit, Dad had to kick the Akita to get it off him as it would not let go - and the owner just wandered up and took the Akita away, didn't even run up and try to separate them!

I think the owners in this situation are just as bad as the dog - if Sam did attack something, I would go flying to separate them, not just stand there and watch it!

Is your Akita okay?  You say it's eye was injured - what happened?  Did it just get a scrape or was the eye actually damaged?
