I took my lively 10 year old Springer to the vets a week and a half ago, she has a skin condition, and had been biting herself. The Vet prescribed Prednisolone and Cephalexin. After a couple of days on the medication she started having problems, vomiting immediately after eating or drinking and diarrhea (I stopped the medication). She couldn't keep any food down on Sunday 23rd and hasn't eaten since, she's not interested and starts to heave if you place food near her. I took her back to the vets on Tuesday, the vet checked her over and gave her a vitamin injection and an injection for the nausea, she's not getting any better. She's gone very weak on her back legs, and, spends most of the time sleeping, she wakes up to pee or poo and drinks small amounts of water. When she vomits now, it's either bile or a clear frothy mucus, her poo is orange, watery and jelly like.

NADINE...my advice for what it's worth..get her to a Vet NOW!!! If you're not happy with your Vet find someone else!!! She obviously needs attention now! All the best, Dawn X

Maybe your vet can refer you to a specialist if they cant find the problem soon enough?

Nadine,

Try giving her some honey or glucose in the drinking water (you may have to give it like medicine at first if she's very low ;) ) this will help encourage her to drink and will help perk her up, also you could offer some Bio Yoghurt which will help to settle the tum and intestines and replace lost good bacteria (a couple of teaspoons at a time, a few times a day)

Go back to your vet and try to find out what the problem is, it could be an extreme reaction to the antibiotics which will settle down in time but you need to be sure it isn't anything else.

Hope this helps

Bad news, I left her at the vets this morning, got the test results back and was told that her kidneys aren't functioning very well. They asked me if I would like her to be put to sleep, as it doesn't seem like she'll get any better, I couldn't do it, she's staying on a drip at the vets for now, and having some treament before I let her go.

Hello Nadine

I have sent you a pm

Nadine you might find this some help.
My heart sank, after reading your message. I thought a lively dog with a skin complaint, put on medication and then has kidney problems. So I went in search and found that -
"Prednisone and prednisolone are members of the glucocorticoid class of hormones. They break down stored resources (fats, sugars and proteins) so that they may be used as fuels in times of stress.
But the medication is used because they are a broad anti-inflammatory medication."

****NOW THE INTERSTING BIT****

SIDE EFFECTS
"Prednisone and prednisolone have activity in the kidney leading to the conservation of salt. This creates the classical side effects of prednisone/prednisolone use: excessive thirst and excessive urination. If this occurs, another steroid can be selected or the prednisone/prednisolone dose can be dropped."

COULD THIS NOT BE WHAT HAS HAPPENED ????

It's possible - don't give up on her yet.
All the best, Anita

Thanks for all your kind messages, sadly she died this morning while I was on my way to the vets. Just hope I get to see her again someday.

I'm so sorry Nadine Mega Cyber {{{{HUGS}}}} from me & the boys

My dearest friend I see you weep
But please promise me you'll keep
My love for you deep in your heart

I know I was your dearest darling one
But only my earthy body that has gone
I watch over you safe in God's arms

I know the pain you feel is hard to bear
& the tears that fall show that you care
Let them heal the hurt you feel

Think of all the things I did
Of stolen toys so safely hid
& please smile at the memories

My dearest friend I loved you so
You know I did not want to go
But here I'll wait so patiently

My dearest friend please smile for me
Sad faces I do not want to see
Safe in your heart I'll always be
