The vet that does mine does them under a General anaethestic take them home same day,get a vet thats well used to doing them because positioning,handling and the quality of the films are really important its not something that can be hurried .

You dont have to wait until 12-months to have a dog's hips x-rayed, they can be checked (but not scored) at any age.
If a dog's hips are awful, it will be apparent, even to a non-expert vet. The problem arises when they are mediocre to good, this is where it is impossible for a layman to hazard a guess.
In the past, when we have had promising males that we have had stud enquiries for, we have had assessment x-rays taken at the vets's, just to see whether there is a likliehood of them being okay after 12-months, or too awful to consider using the dog at stud.
We have shown the plates to long-term breeder friends, and they have never been wrong (in the scale of good,mediocre or bad) when compared to the official hip-score.
