Hi i wonder if anybody can help !! This may sound really stupid but i purchased a cavalier king charles spaniel at the end of last week and the breeder told me it was a girl. On getting home it looks very much like a boy to me. I have an appointment with the vet booked on Wednesday, but i dont think i can wait that long to find out. Does anybody know how to sex a puppy or know of any sights i can visually sex her ? him? please help, this is my first dog !!
I think sometimes the anatomy of a pup can be a bit confusing. I will let someone more eloquent than myself explain ;)
liberty :D

Ok cowards.
Actually puppies are one of the easier animals to sex.
When newborn the males penis looks like a black button just below where the umbilicus attaches, and the bitches vulva like a little bud just below the anus.
In older pups it is again pretty easy as the males penis is on the belly (often with a little wick of hair at the end of the sheath) and again the bitch pups vulva is right at the back below the perineum.
Of course hermaphrodites can occur in canines too, but are pretty rare.

If your puppy is a bitch it will have a vulva just below its bottom between her legs. If it is a dog he will have a wee winky which will be approx 2 or 3 inches further underneath. It is really hard to describe without pics. Hopefully maybe someone else will describe better.

A diagram might be useful or maybe some props to help ;) :D
All I will say is if there is a ickle (gets bigger once it matures ;) ) often hairy sticky out bit on the under carriage then I would suggest the pup is a boy. If there is a lip type thing situated just below the rectum then I would say it is a girl :)

Excellent - I've often thought that those books really lack pictures like that - all my hamster / guinea pig etc books had pictures. Now all I need is pictures of what a bitch looks like normally, at the start of season, and when she is 'red hot' and I'm ready for my girl!! :-)

Unfortunately there are some bitches that swell very little, yet have little trouble being mated, and others that are a bit big even when not in season.
I tend to go on how swollen and hard the perineum is, as th aea aroung th vulva needs to soften before they are ready for mating.

Further to the other people's answers ... I wonder if your puppy might have a hernia that's confusing you?
M.

Very good point Brihow collies, as the great majority of Cavaliers have umbilical hernias.

Obviously, the breeder should have mentioned it if the puppy does have a hernia, but we all know that doesn't always happen ...

Do they ? not my experience only one out of six of mine has had one

I did gulp there for a minute :D Glad it is only the odd one as in most breeds. Though we did have to Springer brothers at out traoingin class which in my view both had large hernias (like one of the large marbles, not the ordinary size ones), though the vet seemed to think they would resolve.

It does seem to run in certain popular bloodlines, but it could be that they breed more puppies so produce more with hernias

I've never had one without an umbilical hernia.

Depending on the breeding IMHO you have been unlucky

My girl has a small / medium one, but my boy doesn't. I know what the OP means though, the button bit on a girl could easily look like a small willy if you haven't seen a dog's bits. With me it's the other way round - someone told me my girl's bits were unusually small, so now I go up to all my friends at shows and ask to see their bitch's bits!!! :-D

LOL Lucy
A local well known "Alsatianist"bought in a puppy as a stud dog & proudly showed it off at the club many years ago Hmm She never did sire any litters ROFLMAO !

Oops, LOL. Have been at a cat show with someone who got best kitten in show with their male, only to be disqualified when it was discovered it was female. At least kittens ARE a bit tricky to sex though, bit difficult for a dog breeder to make the mistake though.
Can understand why a hernia would confuse though, if that is the issue here.

I wasn't quite sure what this thread was going to say, was a bit worried at first lol :) :) :)
