Hi Everyone,
Today my vet told me my Cavalier has heart disease ( his heart is too big) at just 7 years old. She has put him on enalapril and furosemide of which he has to remain for the rest of his life. She also told me he has to follow a low sodium diet, I live in South Carolina and all the low sodium dog foods here are dry and he has hated dry mix ever since he was a puppy. Because I love him so much I am prepared to prepare his every meal myself....has anyone any suggestions on how to produce low sodium meals that dogs will love.....He also loves his treats but the vet couldn't give me a definite answer on whether he can have them or not so would like to know what kind of treats other owners give their dogs who have a similar heart condition. I appreciate any advice as I'm very uncertain and I don't want to do anything that will make him ill.
Hi
Sorry to hear that your dog has heart problems.
The easiest way to a salt free diet would be to feed raw. If you doo a search on Raw feeding or BARF and you will come up with lots of threads. You can also cook liver as a treat and prepare liver cake (but do not use any of the soup mixes as they contain a lot of sodium.

if your dog doesn't like the texture of dry foods and that is what has been suggested to you, could you soak the dry food to make it moist?
