planning permission to board a loft and put in a velux window. I have had so many opinions on this and all different. I am sure someone on here will be in the know and if anybody has a rough idea of how much it would cost I would be grateful.
To board out the loft no you dont need planning permission.
As for the window i would check with your local council as i think this one can vary between areas. I had heard that you need permission just to replace exsisting windows.
As for cost of boarding that would depend on a) the area to be covered and b) whether you are paying somebody to do it or doing it yourself and c) what kind of wood you want to use ie chipboard or toungued and grooved like floorboards. :)

We only had to get planning permission as we were having a dorma window but you will need to get building regs done :)

A quick call to your local council will sort it out once and for all. Certainly dont need permission for boarding but they may have something to say if the velux makes it in to a usable room and there is only a loft ladder access.
I thought you had to get permission if it was at the front of the house. We converted the loft in our last house and put 2 velux wondows in the back..annoyingly when we came to see it couldn't be counted as a bedroom as it had no permenant staircase even though we used it as such and the people who live there now do :D
Loft conversions do need permission
but the op asked about just boarding out and putting in a window,i didnt read it as they want to use it as a bedroom. My loft is boarded out and has an original window but its still only used for storage :)
No they didnt specifically say it was to be used as a bedroom, however I did jump to that conclusion as to put a window in to a storage area could be considered a little extravigant.
>>to put a window in to a storage area could be considered a little extravigant.
LOL i must remember to tell the builders of our house, if they're still alive :D :D
dont want it as a bedroom more as a study room but also storage. Will only be using a loft ladder so not a proper staircase. I have only been in the house for 3 months and on checking the deeds I know planning permission was refused twice a room in the roof space so am hoping this was a proper loft conversion with a dormer and not what I want. By the way next door has got a velux and they do use it as a bedroom but dont know if they have got stairs or just a lift ladder.

Not all councils will give you the info you need :(
Our local council wouldn't even tell us what was allowed as permitted development

all they would say was apply for permission and if its permitted we'll let you know  They wanted plans, planning application (and the fees) etc - the works

We found out about permitted development online ;)
