Topic Dog Boards / Health / Cow Poo!

Hi All

I walk my dogs up the back field (literally behind my back garden) where the cows normally live, in the winter because they are then contained either to one field or indoors, this is also permitted by the farmer BTW.  My problem is the dog's love to eat the cow muck and my OH thinks it's (a) utterly disgusting - which I agree to and (b) can do them harm.  We had a row about it as I said he doesn't need to get so worked up about it (they sometimes ignore his commands to leave it) as it is a natural thing to do - well he doesn't agree and said would I think the same if one of the dogs had to go to the vet due to an infection or some other illness that was caused by the dogs eating cow poo.

So basically I would like to know if it will do them any harm to eat it........I know its gross and seeing them walk about with brown lips is rather stomach churning at 6.30 in the morning but is going to do them harm in the long run if they eat it from time to time?

I think you will find that as long as your dogs are regularly wormed there won't be a problem (at least this is what my vet told me).

I agree it is disgusting, but all mine do it and apart from slightly runny poos and the occassional throwing up after eating too much (makes a lovely stain on the carpet) they are fine and have been doing it for years.

They have never been sick form it or had the trotts (dont think they eat enough, just the odd lick here and there - eeeeuuuuggggghhhh) and they are wormed regularly so hopefully it's OK :)  Cheers for your help.

You're lucky. I'm sure given half a chance my lot would clear the whole field between them!

We have cows and Bess eats their poo, it's never done her any harm. :-)  Her favourite is when calf poo is on the menu..... bright yellow lipstick.

Uhh that's the last time Bali licks my face.
Be thankful they only have a nibble. Last weekend Bobby had a lick then proceded to have a good roll in it. Lovely. Now you know my secret of his lovely shiny coat!!!
