Hi i recently bought an entire male who not only conforms well to the breed standard but also has an excellent temprement an outstanding pedigree and i've just had his hip score result back of 3/3 = total 6(the breed mean score is 13)anyway when i first got him he was all over my bitches who wernt even in season but insisted on trying to mate them, even tying outside himself across the back of one of my bitches. Now i have a bitch who has had one litter 14 months ago,in season and she has been standing for him for 5 days,i've been having her swabbed and the reading says she is at her peak now.Well he tried to mate her this morning(half heartedly,no where near as keen as when i first got him)but he was more side saddle and tied again outside himself. He stood there after with it all hanging out thrusting himself and spurting stuff all over the floor.I separated them and tried them again this evening only for the same thing to happen. The trouble is when i try to help him with his aim,he jumps down off her and starts being silly, jumping around playfully over me and winding in and out of me and the bitch, the bitch in the meantime bless her is quite bewilderd by it all and is trying hard to get him interested in her herself.Im feel so frustrated because he was so keen for the girls in the begining but now one is actually in season he seems to have gone the other way.I would like to persevere with him as i've spent alot of time and money getting him health tested and finding him in the first place(he cost me quite a bit because of his good temp and pedigree)and would dearly love for him to sire this litter,i have had offers of using other dogs ranging from £500 stud fee to paying nothing until the litter is born or paying nothing to prove someones dog,but i dont want to use just any old dog, this is the dog i've chosen to complement my bitch but its not going to plan at the moment and i feel time is running out,any ideas.........please!!

What's he like if you just left them to it and watched through a window? If he goes silly when you touch him, will the bitch let you manouvre her into the correct position if he's getting on side saddle? Have you tried waiting till he's 'committed' then moving him into position? Poor lad is probably unsure of what exactly he's supposed to do. He'll probaby be a lot better subsequently once he's managed a proper mating once. I'm presuming he's a large breed - do you not have an experienced breeder who can help you hold him?
It's either that or grab him by the scruff and the base of the tail and physically stick him on the bitch - he-he!
Thank you phoebe for your reply, lol i have actually tried the peeping through the window but he just cant get his aim right.Funny thing is his aim seemed spot on when i first got him and the girls wernt in season, just cant understand it.Yes they are large breed, but not sure if im allowed to say which breed on here.I have also tried waiting till his actual thingy is out and nearly in her but as soon as i approach to move him round he loses interest and jumps down.I know what you mean by once he's done it there'll be no stopping him but its getting him to do it for the first time.I have had lots of advice from good knowledgable breeders but so far nothing has worked which is why i thought i'd ask on here.Thank you so much for your help and advice but i guess maybe he just isnt one of life's natural studs, will keep trying him each day anyway as i dont want to use just any dog on her through panic, would rather wait till next time, dissapointing though.

From what you've written it sounds as if you are a novice as far as handling the stud is concerned and the dog's a novice too, really you need an experienced breeder to come and help, it's not easy handling too big dogs at a mating, and if the stud needs help an experienced breeder will know what best to do :) Just one of those occasions where reading about it is nothing like the practise :)

Not much help on this occasion but a male I bred that I wanted to use on my Champion bitch a couple of years ago kept tying outside the bitch, and just wouldn't play the game if I intervened.
He is now a proven sire having sired two litters with a further two on the way, but still does not like to be handled or have the bitch held until he has actually tied.
Patience is the key.
Are you keeping him with the bitch or only introduycing him to ehr at the point of trying to mate them. If the latter it cluld be that he is just too eager and also feeling pressurised. I woudl keep them together under strict supervision of course. When it coumes to him mounting if the bitch is a helpful one you could have your hand spread inher groin ans aim her vulva to where he is thrusting. Unfortunaltwly he is just over eager, and cannot contain himself until in place. You may just have to let them practice this season ans hope that by the next season he will have got the idea, especially if you don't keep whipping the bitch away he may just get le4ss excited about it all.
Thank you so much to phoebe and brainless for your advice.I would just like to let you know that after seperating them for the night and reintroducing them this morning he was still acting the same, only halfheartedly trying to mate her and going side saddle again so in the end i took some advice of a very experienced breeder and used a "teaser" dog in front of him, this "teaser"dog is in fact only 8 months old(i wouldnt dare use my older experienced boy to tease with as it wouldnt be fair on him)but as soon as the 8 month old mounted her, the boy im trying to get going went frantic trying to claw through the bars on the gate dragging all the shingle out so i told the 8 month old to jump down which he did(he was not wound up by the experience, his willy didnt even come out of its sheath)and brought her back to the inexperienced boy.Well.................lol my god what a change in his behaviour,he was absolutely frantic for her so much more determined so i brought them indoors to the room i use for this and he was more or less straight on her and this time didnt mind my help as he was so engrossed in what he was doing,i cant believe that just teasing him a little would change his attitude so much, this was the problem i had he just seemed disinterested in her only halfheartedly trying to mate and when i helped him he'd turn his attentions to me to play ball with him or something, now that he's determined to have her rather than the other boy he managed to get it spot on,typical jealous male lol.Anyway they successfully mated and had a tie of a good 15 minutes so im really pleased, and once again thank you for your help and advice.
Just a little note for Dill,i certainly am not a novice,i already own an experienced stud dog and have handled many matings in the past, the problem i had here was getting this boy interested enough so that he was determined to mate the bitch and would accept some guidance from me which he eventually did, thank you anyway.

It could of course be that like many males he likes his bitches really ripe before mating them. I know several males in my breed that won't mate a bitch until she is at the stage with ripened egss (about two days after ovulation) and won't bother before even when teh bitch is eager to be mated.
On both occasions with males like thsi wiht my won bitches I have had nice big litters.
Good luck on getting a litter. I do think you were lucky the 8 month old didn't get there while he had th chance though :D
You'd think the males would take every chance to mate when they can especially when its offered to them on a plate by the bitch and they dont often get a chance to mate lol but i suppose its all down to certain smells otherwise all males would be mating out of season bitches, its a bit rich coming from him though considering he tried them when they wernt even in season then turns his nose up when its offered to him, till he thinks he'll be bothered lol.Thank you for wishing me luck with the (hopefully)impending litter.

Hah, my idiot dog is very keen to mate my never-been-in-season puppy, who looks like she is planning to go for the record of latest ever first season!!

He might have gone all coy if you told him off for mating the girls when he first arrived. Would explain why he went silly when you tried to help him as it may have been in the back of his mind that you were going to tell him off again. But once he thought some other dog was going to mate the bitch, he forgot all about his hang ups - he-he!
I'm glad he finally managed it and he's a 'man' now!

Chelseablue,
Sorry if I offended by suggesting you might be a novice but the words you were using were those that most novices use when talking about mating dogs ;) never heard an experienced hand be so coy before :D :D :D
Glad you got the mating you wanted, hope you also get the litter you want too :D :D
Thats ok,no offence taken lol i have just re-read my original post and if you are refering to the "spurting stuff all over the place" bit, lol, i appologise,i'll try and be a bit clearer in future, without being too graphic lol as this is, after all, a public forum and im not sure how blunt we can be but then again i expect most of you are pretty hardened when it comes down to discussing the nitty gritty of mating lol. Thanks again to you all.
