Topic Dog Boards / Health / possible tummy upset, very depressed...
- By whisper21 [gb] Date 14.10.05 19:36 UTC
I have come home from work and my dog is very depressed, tail down, eyes dull and sulky. He is in pain and sqeeks when he jumps down off sofa or stands on back legs against door (which he only tried once usually jumping up and down all time) he refuses to jump up onto things eg: sofa bed which he usually would straight away. He had a few tummy gurgles earlier but they have stopped, and he hasn't been to loo since we got home, hes had upset tummies before but never been depressed or squeeked when picked up etc... Do you think its more serious or just a very poorly tum?? Am taking him to vet in morning if no improvement, unless he gets worse then i may phone out of hours. What do you think? Am i being over paranoid about an upset tum or not??

Can you take his temperature?

I don't think he would have fallen and hurt himself, i have touched all his legs and all over his skin with gentle pressure and it doesn't seem to be a particular injury. His temperature is 38.1 which i think is just over 100. which is slightly lower (by points of degrees) under the average according to a site i just looked on. He musters a tail wag every now and then for me and makes an effort to follow me around but hes definately not himself.

If he's normally a dog that jumps a lot, is it possible he may have fell off the back of the sofa or something when you were out?

He just drank a bit of milk, still won't eat, seems to be managing the steps into kitchen better with no squeaking. seems a little happier and abit more alert, will moniter him over next few hours. Hopefully he was just bloated or crampy with upset tummy, i know how us humans feel when we have them i don't suppose its much different if you are a dog!

If he's not eating and seems not well in other ways I would get him to the vet.  Copper fell off the bed once and hurt himself (not badly) and he was behaving like he was very depressed, just lying around and not even wanting to go for his walks, so it might be something like that.  However, I still had him to the vet and if I was you I would take yours.

If he was my dog I would get him to the vet now :)

Any further news yet??? Just to say, that when you have a child or pet with an acute abdomen, even walking is painful! My Dr came out to see my son who I suspected of having Appendicitis...he got him to hop up and down on one leg!! I was suitably horrified, when he turned round and said..."Children with an acute abdomen CANNOT tolerate a 'hop', something I learnt from an old GP over 20 years ago and it's never failed me yet!" As a Nurse in A&E I had seen lots of kids, but never seen anyone do the HOP!!! LOL and having experienced Peritonitis myself, I can definately vouch for the Dr!! My advise would be that if walking causes pain, you need to see a Vet(or a DR if you have 2 leggies!! LOL) All the best, love Dawn X
