Topic Dog Boards / Health / Johnson's ear drops :-(

We've always used Thornit when necessary if our labs had any waxy ears, always worked perfectly. Luke has been shaking his head for a few days, so I've used Thornit again with no effect. Yesterday I bought some Johnson's ear drops for mites, which I have used years ago when I had Cavaliers. I used them on Luke and he reacted as though they stung - supposed to be soothing...- then I noticed his ears were red inside. We're off to the vets this afternoon, which I should have done yesterday, of course...:-( - instead of buying drops at the pet shop. However I am very concerned that something which can provoke this reaction is available over the counter. Should I ring Johnson's?

Depends, what does it say on the label?

Does it for example say never to use on broken skin?

No - it just says to consult vet if condition doesn't clear. Anyway, the vet says Luke's ears are in quite a mess and he has to go in tomorrow to have them examined under GA. I just feel very guilty now for not going to the vets earlier. :-(
