I would say that they are very vocal - I used to work with GSD's and own them and now have Rottweilers and the Shepherds were far noisier playing and generally if wanting attention etc than my rotts and mums Leonberger :D

The one next door to me is almost silent. She barks maybe once or twice a week.

Have GSD, Rott + X breed - all FAR quieter than 2 terriers next door, pack of cavaliers over road or B Collie round the corner

Amber barks as she runs out the door or if shes excited my border collies are 99% more noisy.

I would agree that Shepherds can be more vocal than some other breeds. In my case, all of my girls were real chatterboxes and didn't need a good excuse to start them off :D The boys were "chatty" but they had to have a better reason to do it than the girls.

Probably my fault as I did used to encourage it  I still miss it today as my current breed don't do the "chatting", just the moaning when it's food time :P

So, after all of my rambling and succumbing to nostalgia <big sigh> the answer is - yes they are more vocal ;)

After living with 4 gundogs I find a GSD very vocal indeed, however I expected it and was prepared for it.

I have 2 GSD the eldest bitch is VERY QUIET, hardly ever barks..but the puppy who is almost 5 months is VERY vocal, he has different barks for different reasons, I almost fathomed them all out.

I have two girls one nine years who hardly ever barks and a two year old whose second hobby is to bark her first one is eating but I find she has differing tones to her voice and I always can tell when she is greeting someone , excited ,worried or if I need to investigate any thing.
