I've just had to laugh at my Tibetan Mastiff puppy. He has quite a varied diet and in the time I've had him, I've never known him refuse any food until tonight. I had a wood pigeon which I cut the breasts off for my tea (and delicious it was too!). I thought he'd love the rest of the bird as he goes through chicken wings like there's no tomorrow.
I chopped a leg off and gave it to him. He looked at me very suspiciously, snifed it. looked at me again and then took it gingerly and ran into the living room. So I follow him to see what he's up to and there he is he's rolling about on it. So the carcass is in the bin and I'll buy my pigeon ready filleted from now on!
p.s. Don't worry - he had his complete food and a tin of sardines for his proper tea - the pigeon was supposed to be a treat.
Phoebe - next time wait a bit longer. Often when dogs are given something new, they react like this. But often when they've calmed down and stopped 'enjoying' it so much by playing with it, they will eat it. So try waiting longer next time...

I got my dogs some wood pigeons a few months back as I thought they might enjoy them (well they normally enjoyed trying to catch them ~ lol!!) Anyway, obviously found them too gamey as they wouldn't have anything to do with them!! Even my canine dustbin (I mean Abbie!!) wouldn't touch hers!!
I've not tried them again since & strangely enough they've also stopped trying to catch them ~ hmmm!!

Thanks for the advice...
Perhaps I'll buy my two a pigeon for their tea tomorrow in the hope that it will stop them from chasing after the collar doves and 'woodies' that want to come to our feeding stations ;-)

I did leave it with him for about 10 minutes, but he wasn't having any of it. Once he'd finished rolling he lost interest. I just don't think it was to his taste. It is an acquired taste - I'd eat game every day but some people won't touch it with a bargepole.

Phoebe, please come over to my house. My garden is full of wood pigeons and I cannot stand them. Dog poo on the lawn is easy to pick up - a wood pigeon "plop" is disgusting and impossible to get out of the grass.
I'm not fond of pigeon as a food either. I ordered pigeon a couple of years ago at a really posh restaurant in Surrey (I was NOT paying) - the one where the chef serves up creations like bacon and egg ice cream. Of course, maybe if it had been cooked rather than merely warmed up to blood temperature it would have been edible.

I'll be round in the morning with my shotgun :D Only joking - I'm too big a coward to kill my own food.
Must admit I think I'd have balked at nearly raw wood pigeon, but the writing was on the wall when you said he did bacon and egg ice cream - a bit too cosmopolitan for me I'm afraid.
