Topic Dog Boards / Health / Help! Sick Boxer..Threw Up A Bar Of Soap
- By Dexters_mom [ca] Date 09.10.05 02:37 UTC
My 5 yr old boxer threw up a bar of soap about 1/2 hr ago and he is still really sick. He threw up 3 times so far, the last time being 5 mins ago. Is there anything I can do for him? What worries me even more is that he is currenly undergoing chemotherapy. Should I be concerned? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Since he has already thrown up, at least he is getting it out of his system. That's a plus. I would suggest giving him a 5-gram tablet of compressed activated charcoal. This will prevent his system from absorbing anything that would be toxic from the soap. You should be able to find them at a drugstore. If you are that worried, especially with him undergoing chemotherapy, I would call your vet and see what they suggest. If they're not open at the moment call one that has emergencey services, they can help you. Especially if it will just ease your mind. I hope that you pup gets better!!  ~Remi's Mom

Its 1:30 am here and unfortunatley all of the drugstores are closed. I just called an emergency # in the nearest city....and they are only an answering service. They have to page a vet and wake them up to answer any medical questions, and the guy didnt seem like it was a big enough emergency to do so....I dont know what to do...I just wish I knew if soap was toxic to dogs. I will have to wait and see how he is in the morning.

Why do things always have to happen on a long weekend !!

I shouln't worry - my flatcoat ate a a bar of soap when she was in whelp - didn't even sick it up!     She was fine, and went onto have a wonderful litter of 11 nice clean puppies!!!

My old labrador regularly ate bars of soap (her particular favourite was Wright's Coal Tar). We used to search high and low for the missing bars, thinking they'd slipped down the back of the washbasin. She never had any ill-effects from it!

Unless it was some kind of very strong soap I wouldn't worry. My Boxer ate a bar of soap many years ago and was fine. I only knew he'd done it because I caught him with the last bit in his mouth

Thank you everyone for your help. Dexter is seems to be feeling better today. I went back out this morning to clean up his vomit, and not only was there soap, but I found chicken bones in his throw up as well!!  I have no clue how he got into the garbage, I have a child lock on the cupboard door! Dexter never had his morning "poop" yet, but he is eating fine and drinking lots of water so I hope he got everything up.

Poor Dexter gets so hungry from his chemo medication that he will eat just about anything. He has been through so much in the last month that it was breaking my heart seeing him that sick last night. Thanks again

Oh Im so glad to hear that he is back to normal. Mind you soap is largly fat based and my lab loves it so much he will come and lick it off of you in the bath and it has to be kept out of the way when not in use!

If he is SO hungry he is going to great lenghts to steel things it may be worth asking the vet if there is something he can have to fill him up a bit without putting too much weight on.

For some reason our internet was out the other night, so I couldn't respond to the post But I am so glad to hear that he is doing better! I am so surprised to hear so many dogs eating soap! haha! But now thinking about it my lab loves to lick my legs when I get out of the shower, lotion and all, so on second thought maybe its not so surprising!!
