Its no-ones fault although the disease is genetic, you should contact the breeder.
Good Luck :)

Breeders can neck score for Wobblers and it is considered inherited, although I believe accidents can cause the onset of symptoms.  I had one with it.  Dont think it has anything at all to do with calcium in the diet its a mis-alignment of the cervical vertibrae in the dogs neck.  You should inform the breeder.

Hi Dawn

I have never managed to find anyone who scores - someone used to do it for some research he was doing but it is not a recognised scheme :-(

It is sheer bad luck and probably some genetics that has caused your dog's problems.  Which treatment has your vet recommended

There was a phase a few yrs back wasnt there, I know certain people were scroing and they would not allow bitches to be used on their dogs if they were not scored, I know this because my friend did not have it done so she couldnt use the dog she wanted to.  It certainly runs in families, no doubt about it, and having had one and known several with it, you can see it VERY early on in apparently normal dogs who's owners are not aware, so therefore I cant see it not being hereditary, as the animals have had no accidents or trauma.  I agree with you about accidents etc though, have known it to come on that way, but that makes me even more concerned that there is such a weakness there in the first place.

Dawn what do you mean by scoring, in all my years of owning Danes I have never heard of any type of scoring for wobblers and it is occurs quite often in our breed. As far I have been told and I am no expert it takes both dog and bitch to be a carrier of the gene. It cannot always be spotted very early, I know older Danes who have suddenly developed the symptoms and I am sure other breeds prone to this condition. It is a very concerning condition and in Danes I am sure there are not many lines completely clear of the problem and until such times as a means of testing for wobblers it will keep rearing its ugly head. Not many people are willing to admit to having wobblers in there lines and the research requires afflicted dogs to have blood and pedigrees submitted this is where it is falling down as very few are willing to give this information. I do agree there are many owners who would not recognise the symptoms especially as some can be very minor wobblers and go through life quite happily.

There is no test for wobblers, I have never heard of neck scoring. As far as I am aware wobblers can be an inherited condition, it can also be brought on by trauma or an accident there is also some thought that incorrect feeding can contribute. The Great Dane clubs are doing research at the moment hoping to isolate the gene that can cause it, but that is a long way off.
