Topic Dog Boards / General / cant get rid of the smell
- By ClaireyS Date 04.10.05 14:42 UTC
As you may have read on my other post Alf has been a little bit poorly, unfortunately he decided to be poorly all over my carpets :(

He has pooed all over my stairs carpet and my huge rug in the living room ( the only carpet he has access to, everywhere else is wood and he missed that  )  I cleaned the poo off and scrubbed it with a mix of hot water and biological washing powder, I then went over it with that vanish carpet foam stuff and my rubber broom, there is no staining thankfully,  but it still STINKS :(

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get rid of the smell ?

have you tried sprinkling bicarbonate of soda over the area and leaving it over night and then hoovering it up in the morning.

I havent tried that, I will have to get some bicarb tonight and give it a go.

It is a slightly different smell, but our son spilt some milk a while ago, and due to the OH not clearing it up properly ( ;) ) it started to really smell, we were advised to use white vinegar on it, the vinegar smelt a bit, but it was better than gone off milk, an once the smell of vingar had gone so was the smell of sour milk!

I would try the bicarb first though, it has always worked for us before the milk incident! Also you could try slicing a lemon into chunks and leave it in a bowl with some pure lemon juice next to the bicarb on the floor, it is known to absorb smells as well, I use it in my fridge to stop the onions smelling (yes before you say we do keep our onions in the fridge!!) :D

I keep onions in my fridge too :)

You are the only other person I have ever found that keeps onions in the fridge!! We used to have a huge American fridge freezer, before we had the kitchen fitted and someone (my OH  ) decided he wanted a fitted fridge and seperate freezer put in, since then we have never had enough room in the fridge because we found a lot of foods tasted great from the fridge rather than the cupboard!! Crisps are the best from the fridge, and marmite :D

Yes onions, in fact all my fruit and veg, jams, pickles, etc., not an American fridge just an extra wide English type fridge, none of those silly wee compartments just acres of space :).  It all keeps very much better, the darkness helps too 'cos I believe the little light goes off when you shut the door although I have never sat in there to test it myself

whats strange about keeping onions in the fridge? i've always kept mine there too :D
- By ClaireyS Date 04.10.05 15:55 UTC
I wouldnt go as far as putting crisps in there !!
- By ShaynLola Date 04.10.05 15:56 UTC
I keep onions in the fridge too...had no idea it was considered strange :)

And because we have a huge American style fridge freezer, I tend to keep loads of stuff in it too (not crisps, though...don't they go soft??)
- By Natalie1212 Date 04.10.05 16:06 UTC
LOL I honestly have never met anyone else who keeps onions in the fridge, everyone always says 'Onions? In your fridge?' LOL It must be a dog thing!! ;) :P

Crisps are gorgeous in the fridge, especially plain/original ones, gives them another dimention!!! I have heard others say they go soft, but I don't think they do.

The other odd thing we always have in the fridge are sauces, you know like ketcthup and BBQ sauce etc, they are lovely out of the fridge :D

i always keep my chocolate in there too..... nice and hard so it melts slowly and lasts longer :D
- By Natalie1212 Date 04.10.05 16:16 UTC
The only thing with chocolate on that we keep out of the fridge is Jaffa cakes, and normal chocolate cakes, the sponge bit always goes hard, oh and Thomas' chocolate spread, I like chocolate but that stuff is horrid!!!

Also things like peanuts and pork scratchings are good from the fridge, all of the friut and veg stays in the fridge except potatoes, all pickles and jams as well. When we moved into our first flat, for some reason the heating thermostat was only in one flat, and they had control over how hot all of the flats were in the house, they must have been ill because our flat was at a constant 30 degrees, we used to then keep bread in the fridge because it was just green mouldy after a day or so out of it!

I keep my onions in the fridge too lol. Always have done.
- By ShaynLola Date 04.10.05 16:35 UTC
The contents of your fridge sounds pretty much like mine, Natalie. LOL :D Jams, chutneys, pickles, sauces all in there...and chocolate. We keep the potatoes in there too. My Oh is the fussiest person when it comes to potatoes (his Dad grows them) and they have to be stored 'just so' Our fridge has an 'ultra cool' drawer for meat but as we don't tend to store a lot of meat, it's always full of beer and wine :D :D
- By Natalie1212 Date 04.10.05 16:55 UTC
LOL ours just get chucked in where ever it will fit now, we went from a huge fridge and freezer, to smaller than a larder fridge and freezer, all thanks to my hubbies big design plans - me personally, I think the American fridge freezer would have looked better in the new kitchen! We do always manage to find room for wine and beer though!! :)
- By ShaynLola Date 04.10.05 16:58 UTC
Kitchen design was my department when we renovated the house so I got EVERYTHING I wanted and the OH got to sign the cheques to pay for it all :D :D
- By Natalie1212 Date 04.10.05 17:02 UTC
My hubbie does all of the cooking so we said I could pick the design of it, but he was picking everything else, I should have had a clause that said we are keeping the f/f, he never liked it when we bought it!

If you can lift the carpet, do this. is what i do for rugs.

Large selection of towels.

Hot water with bio washing powder

Hot water without.

Put a towel folded under the patch, a towel on top as a sausage, around the patch.

POUR water on, hot soapy water, and scrub (unless its a really posh rug, then dab and pray).

Keep doing this, and changing the towels underneath, washing the stain/mess THROUGH the carpet.

This usually takes a whole washer load of towels, but it successfully removes wee from carpets!
