Hi, can anyone recommend a good prevention for puppy car travel sickness? We are going on a 3 hour journey this weekend and our 3 month old Beagle does not travel well, she constantly drools and vomits several times a journey. Our vet prescribed some AMP tablets for this but they don't seem to touch her at all, they just make her a bit wobbly!
I have been told about Sealegs and Sturgeron tablets and also good quality Ginger Nut biscuits??, any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Firstly DON'T FEED her the morning of the journey ;) if her tums empty then there's less to make her feel sick, just offer her some glucose and water at least an hour before, and then sips during the journey if she want it. Let her have plenty of time to empty herself before the jouney so she won't have to worry about that ;) - take her for a good walk to tire her out so she should sleep then ;)
And you can get GINGER tablets in the pet shop to help her, or you could make a ginger pill yourself with a 1/4 teasp of ginger powder and a little bit of jam to bind it, give ginger at least half an hour before the journey to give it time to work :D :D
Hope this helps

Great, many thanks for your tips, we will definatley give them a go. (Maybe apart from the glucose as the breeder told us to give her this EVERYDAY with her water and it seems to make her very or more hyper than she already is!!) Fingers crossed she won't be too bad but we shall keep trying or hope she grows out of it soon!

Lolab try a mixture of Petroleum, Cocculus, and Borax, available from Ainsworths or Helios. 200c if it is very bad. Homoeopathy will not have any side effects other than it may not work.

does that mixture work for bad drooling ( no sickness) in vehicles do you know?
i think in our case its more anxiety than travel sickness, as kai starts to drool when his car harness goes on before we even get out to the car.
tried alsorts and still no change, any ideas?

There are many homoeopathic remedies for travel sickness and the one(s) you choose may need to be juggled until you find the one that fits your dog. As I am not a registered or qualified homoepath I cannot give you a definitive answer however.
FWIW the remedies are not expensive and at worst will do no harm (on a short term basis) and at best may improve or even eradicate the problem.

thanks i just wondered.. as we have tried all those that are listed for travel sickness and they dont work....
maybe i shall try some for anxiety... nothing to loose i suppose, except maybe the drool lol :D

The efficacy of homoeopathy can also depend on the strength of the remedy. Therefore for example 6c may be insufficient for the dog in question and it may need 30c, 200c or 1M; depending on the severity of the problem.
If it is a chronic problem then I would advise you to get an appointment with a member of the BAHVS who can take a detailed history and advise a bespoke remedy.

My friend who is a vet gives hers a human remedy called sea legs. We used to give ours serene um tablets. We found the best way although this wont help you this weekend is to take your beagle out for short car journeys every day. We also put ours on my daughters lap as this reassured her. Good luck there is nothing worse than a sickly beagle it gets all around their ears when they drool.

I use sea legs too! They work brilliantly!

I have a very car sick Westie. Pills from vets did not work - sick after 15 mins. I have found DAP spray and used it 2x for short journeys. No sickness and much less drooling. Hope that is going to help with longer journeys eventually.
