A dear friend has just lost her 16 month old Sheltie pup to leukemia :(  Does anyone know anything about this disease in dogs?

Many thanks

Hi, Yes I had a beautiful E.Setter male and he died from Leukaemia. He was out of excellent lines, but I always felt that as a youngster he lacked stamina. He was looked after like a "Prince" and became a wonderful dog.By the time he was 6yrs,he started to have bad diarrhoea bouts that my Vet controlled initially with Kaobiotic and diet. However during one of the frequent visits my vet felt hard glands under his jaw,in his neck and all over the body, just small hard glands. He looked at me and said,I think this dog has Leukaemia.Sadly his prognosis was right,we struggled on with Steroids and diet for months but gradually he lost ground and started to be in pain. The last week of his life we took him to a holiday place on the coast that we know he loved. The last night before he died he was in a lot of pain and my husband spent most of the moonlit night walking him gently standing with the dog in a slow moving shallow small river, and that eased his pain. The next day we drove home straight to the Vet, and while my husband held him,the last injection was gently given. My husband cradled this beautiful boy in his arms until he felt his great heart stop beating.
He was buried, alongside other much loved pets graves, below the canopy of a beautiful Maple tree.
Leukaemia in dogs is very sad,but we can help them through their last months with love, dignity and support, and, when the pain finally gets too much,we can be there with them right up until the very end.So that the last thing they ever see in this World, are the devoted eyes of their owners
