My hubby and I are checking into dog breeds and was thinking about doing this training.... Just curious how Bordeaux's are for this type of training or would they be too much weight. Would a Doberman be a better choice? I know malinois are used alot with this training.... We just really like the bordeaux's and I have gathered alot of information on the dogs and the tests required for the breed ect ect...

Not planning on getting a dog anytime soon since I have 5 and my youngest is only 4 years old, am planning on getting all the information about this training before I do decide. I have been fascinated by schutzhund for awhile...

Dobes certainly excel at this, don't know about Bordeaux's. Why not do a Google search and contact some Schutzund clubs for advice.

They might struggle with the agility side although it is better IMHO that the WT agility & they would need to be a very fit dog as there is a lot of tracking, heelwork etc invloved & they are quite a heavy dog.

Schutzhund dogs do need 150% temperament with other dogs as the Temp Test isn't just human to dog but dog to dog

It takes a lot of dedication & hard work to compete in any of the dogs sports LOL you can end up not having much of a life outside of them :) You do need to be fairly need a schutzhund club BTW to train & as far as I am aware to compete your dog has to be tattooed for ID

Hi dollface, if you go to the above link you will find a list of clubs and contacts.  They will be able to tell you if there are currently any DDB in training, although I am not personally aware of any.

THe majority of the dogs participating in this sport in the UK are GSDs, with a few Dobes, Rotts, and Malis,

There are "other" breed individuals such as American Bulldogs etc that are also in training.

The agility requirements for Schutzhund are not so demanding as Working Trials; eg the former only has an A frame, not a 6ft scale nor a 9ft long jump.

Lists of surveys are posted on this site and so it may be worth you visiting as a spectator to talk with enthusiasts to get a better
idea.

As Moonmaiden says you need to have your dog tattood and belong to the BSA and be accepted for training by a club   before you are allowed to participate in training activities.

The first rung in the ladder is the BH or Begleithunde which all dogs must pass to demonstrate they possess the temperament and that they are under sufficient control  before they may participate in the Sch 1,2,3 competitions.

You do need a club to train for schutzhund because of the nature of the tests & unlike obedience/WT you can't really train on your own.

You'll be made welcome at whichever club is your nearest even if you do not compete,  I went to a club tests near London & apart from the weather(we had rain, hail, snow & sunshine)I had a great time-my German friend, Petra Konig, was over judging 

I've done schutzhund in the past & I sent Petra her first dog, a BC, who not only did breed but also did Schutzhund & represented Germany in international competitions. She now has working bred GSDs

I originally wanted to do it with Junior my Boston Terrier he has a great prey drive and can hold on real good, but my hubby laughed at me. So I dropped that idea and I have done some obedience and agility with him but schutzhund was something I wanted to get into and I think Junior would have really enjoyed it... Junior is now 4 years old so probably too old to start now , by the time we are ready for another dog my children will be older and I can get into this with my dog and will have the time and money to spend. Right now all goes into the kids sports which if fine right now gives me plenty of time to research.

American Bulldogs are also used for this and they are excellent at it :)

Your Dog does not only need to be tattooed, it can be micro chipped but you will need your own reader to identify your dog.

If you want to compete in the UK under the British Schutzhund Association rules your dog has to be tattooed

Rule A2.2 of the BSA rules is quite clear the wording is must be tattooed there is no allowance in the rules for microchips with or without your own scanner I don't know where you got your information from Dogman but it is incorrect at this time

The rules of Schutzhund in most countries is quite clear, tattooing is mandatory.

Of course it may be different in some countries if they are ony a national organisation and not affiliated internationally.

Boy Oh boy do I have alot of studying to do on this, better to have all the right information before I get into it. Atleast I have plenty of time to research on schutzhund as well as the breed of dog my hubby and I can agree on lol ... Think I should have more of the choice since I will be the one doing it, but who knows he may want to himself so we will each have a dog.
