I was at a benched show the other week and saw what looked like a baby gate on a bench stopping the dog getting off, it also covered the top. I liked this idea.  during the summer i've been using a soft crate which wont fit on the benches. any ideas where i can get one ,do they ajust to fit various size benches or would i need one for medium size and one for large?

Look on trystorme.co.uk bench guards £49.95 standard but they have adjustable fixings. or do a search for bench guards you may find them a little cheaper, I got mine from trystorme and found them reliable and helpful.
