hi ive read quite a few posts about people giving their dogs omega fish oils for their coat, brain etc, and in some cases to calm them down. Is it just the normal human capsules people use and if so how do you feed them?

we feed an omega-3 food supplement called quistel you can check out there web site to find some where that stocks in near you or order from there site.www.quistel.co.uk

Omega 3 EFA are found in various places but those that are found in Fish Body Oils have the highest concentration and are in a form that is easily metabolised by the body.  Linseed for example does contain Omega 3s but some dogs lack the enzymes required for changing it into an available form.  Also, unlike linseed,  FBO have an anti inflammatory effect.

You can buy FBO anywhere in the supermarket, health food shops etc.  There is not need to purchase those specially formulated for dogs! ;)

Omega 3s also help in optimising brain function in the young and old.

What is important to remember is that if you do supplement with FBO then you MUST also supplement with Vitamin E, preferably natural (you can tell if the container is marked d alpha tocopherol instead of dl alpha tocopherol, the latter is synthetic and not as potent or as available to the dog).

You cannot OD on FBO and a weimaraner could have 1000mg per day with 400 iu of Vitamin E.

Do not be tempted to use Cod Liver Oil instead as this contains Vitamin A which can be toxic to dogs, especially pregnant bitches and those that are already receiving Vit A in their commercial dog food or who are eating liver regularly.

It does not have a calming effect per se however............. ;)

Hi Tohme,
Why is it necessary to feed vit. E along with fbo?

Sarah.
- By tohme Date 26.09.05 10:28 UTC
Because ingestion of FBO depletes Vitamin E in the body.

VitE also stops the fish oil going rancid inside the body(trans fatty acids).

Sorry Hailey, I am confused.

What do FBO have to do with trans fatty acids?

And how does FBO go rancid inside the body?
