Topic Dog Boards / Health / undescended testicle in young puppy
- By gallup [us] Date 24.09.05 21:49 UTC
Hello All:
I am searching to find information on undescended testicles.... I have a 12 week old male  puppy the only one in this litter that has this problem.... as a matter of fact this is the first time I have had this problem out of 6 litters.....
At what age do I just give up and say forget  it... time to neuter him?   Did this come from Mom's side or Pop's ?  The girls that I kept from this litter will they be a carrier of this?  What about his brother? How do I protect the future of my line from this?   This male was sold  for competion not only in the field but the show ring as well.... Any advice, suggestions, comments are greatly welcome... As the new owners and myself are  terribly upset over this.....

Hi Gallup

I have an Irish Setter who was sold to me as a show dog at 8 weeks, the breeders were sure he had both his testicles but when I took him to the vets he had none but we didnt worry too much about this, then at 5 months old  we realised he only had one, he is now 18 months old and I will be getting his retained testicle removed when he is two - I wont be getting him neutered.  At 12 weeks your pup is still very young, I have heard of it coming down at 12 months old before so dont panic just yet.  There were two in my boys litter with only one, him and the runt boy, it is not known which line it come from as obviously everyone denies having any in "there" line who are mon-orchid   Have you taken him to the vet to see if it can be located ? it may be in the area and can often be massaged down if it is.  I can understand how upset you must be, I was devestated, as were my boys breeders, in fact I am now in partnership with them on a new pup because of this.

I hope it all works out

Claire :)

Hi Claire:
Thank you for your reply... Yes he has been seen by the vet.  and she is concerned that it has not dropped by now.... And yes she can feel it... And of course the owner is so very upset by this as I am.... And yes I will gladly give them anotehr dog once they neuter him.... They are a wonderful home....  But what concerns me is where the heck did this come from...  this is my females second and last litter... no problems with the first litter... However  this is a different sire.... How do you  check with  the owner of sires for this if they won't be honest????  I am just at a loss..... :(  Gallup

Hi it is common for a testicle not to drop until the dog is about 9mths old or later did your vet have a good feel? give him a few more months before you decide on anything

Hi Polly:
Yes he has been in twice since he turned 8 weeks old and she checks it each time.... And yes she said she can feel it...This is not a common disorder in my breed... So I will sit back and wait.... WHen would you suggest  waiting no more?  I do not want this  young male to suffer any chance of cancer....  Thanks  RUthann

Hi gallup i would say at least ten to twelve months for the testicle to descend. what breed is he? with my youngest here i thought the same at ten weeks old he had only one testicle that was prominent, but by the time he was six mths old the other had descended.give him time.im sure someone else may come along and advice you better than i have. but by no means is it uncommon.

Thank you all for  giving me your advice and suggestions... I truly do appreciate it.....  I am very frustrated over this....
Yes she did and he will be going in tomorrow to the vet. for his next set of shots.....  Beck was just here and  of course  I had to check him out as well... I can feel both of them..... Then when he was trying to climb up in my lap to be rocked I felt none... So I advised his owner to leave  him alone and lets let nature  do it's thing..... I will be checking out the Clemantis and special boy....If I have to send to England to get it so be it......
Now I was told that this problem comes from the sire.... oh great... I imported this male...... I didn't like anything here in the states.... But my vet. also said that this  could be resessive and  might not happen for another 500 dogs...  I kinda laughed at her and said well heck then someone else will have to worry about it... there is no way I can come up with that many puppies  * snickering *  I breed seldom and only breed to improve my lines.... So of course this is a great concern to me.....
Oh I forgot... my breed is German Shorthaired Pointers..... and I have never had this problem before trust me I would own up to it if I did.... You can't help your breed if you won't be honest about it.....  I am so grateful that I  found this list... Kind Regards Gallup

If your vet can feel the other testicle then it has every chance of dropping down as tit is only just above where it should be.  You would have more to worry about if it couldn't be felt at all.

We imported a pup at 9 weeks old who was entire but when haing his final jabs the vet couldn't feel both.  Also if you keep on trying to feel for them the pup will get tense and is likely tio draw one or both up.  Testicles are designed to have a bit of up and down to keep them at the correct temperature as asult which is while you will often see them dangling low in the hot weather and being caried more neatly in the cold.

My friend's dog used to pull one of his up when he was a bit nervous on the table at shows - bit of a problem for her!!

hi,
my last pup only had 1 at 9 weeks wheni brought him home, the breeders assured me that they had alwyas been able to feel 2, i could not find the missing one and when i had him checked at work 2 very experinced vets said they could not find the missing one at all and said they doubted it was there and no chance it would come down and as i had bought him as a potential show dog i should return him!  i was absolutly gutted as had waited 2 years for a pup from this particular kennel but decided to keep him anyway (vets thought i was stupid!) had him checked a few days after i decided to keep him and a different vet could feel it just above where it should be, so after speaking to some friends decided to try some herbal remedies.  there is a remedy on http://www.caninenaturalcures.co.uk i bought called "boyspecial"  and i also gave him clematis.  now i dont know if these made a difference or helped or if his testicle would have come down ayway but his missing one did eventually come down within a few weeks!  :-)  took great pleasure in telling the vets told told me to return him when it did come down!!
he is still very young you could try some remedies and see if they help, and try massaging the area when he is relaxed to sleepy but if the testicle is very high up there is a chance the igunial canal could close down enough to stop it descending but if your vet can feel it and it is not that high up, my boys was just above the scrotum, there is a good chance it will come down.  try to resist the temptation to constantly check it (difficult i know when you are worried!) but he could become tense and withdraw it back!

I certainly wouldn't worry until the pup is a year old at least.   Quite often in our breed the testicles don't come down until the pup is about 4 months or even older.

Still difficult not to be worried, but please stop fiddling if you can!!   Clematis 30x can help.

I believe genetically any pre-disposition to a genuine monochid condition is carried on the female side of the family, which seems weird but true.   Must look up the details.....

I had to laugh when the rather hunky Spanish vet asked me if I knew my Roy(aged 16 weeks)only had one testicle :D! I told him I never checked them until much later & as he's a smooth coated BC his two small but perfectly formed bits are now visible for all to see ;) I'll be off back for his Rabies jab next week(for his PP)

The more people mess about with male puppies ;ooling for them the more the puppy is likely to draw one or both up

On the other hand my friend bred a harlequin Great Dane who was entire(visibly)from 4 weeks old-he was a very big boy mind you & once they were down they stayed there!

Hi Jo:
I was told by my vet. that it is the Male that  is the carrier of this :( And since I have not had this before and this male is imported and this is his first litter...  So I will hold judgement for now.....  I am concerned as I brought this boy over for my lines... and by doing so what if I have now put  something into my lines that was never there before * pulling my hair out * :(  Kind Regards  Gallup

Hi Gallup

Many geneticists believe the condition is polygenic (under the influence of more than one gene). A few think it is a simple autosomal recessive.   Either way,  both sire and dam have to be carriers for the condition to exist.

Obviously, the condition is not expressed in the female, but she can still carry the specific combination of genes (or the single recessive gene if you go along with that theory).

I still wouldn't panic until the pup is a year old

Good Luck

If you do a Google search on Canine Monorchids you will find that BOTH parents have to carry the defective gene.  I only found this out after getting a Monorchid puppy myself a couple of years ago.  In my case I did return the puppy as he had been bought with a view to show & hopefully use at stud.  It was all very, very upsetting at the time but we made the right decision.

Having said that, I do know that some dogs are slower to develop than others.  The fact that the Vet CAN feel both is a very good indication that both should come down when they're ready.

All the best

Well he was in for his 3rd. set of shots... and Doc. told us  that she could not find it at all... she was sure I had felt a lymp node.... But she kept at it.. and finally  said I found it.... it is behind some fatty tissue  she was able to move it around so the cord is not to short... it is just  caught on the fatty tissue... she now feels we should have no trouble having it descend....  But only time will tell now won't it.... SO keeping my fingers crossed here... and waiting oh NOT so patiently... Thanks Everyone for al lthe info.... Gallup
