Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Anyone else had this problem with PAH Fo

Put my pup on PAH puppy food as he has a wheat/gluten allergy causing him to scratch wildly.  It cleared that up and he was fine, but then he started eating his own poo.
Changed my other pup onto it a few weeks later for ease of feeding and now she has started eating her poo.
Anyone else feed PAH puppy who has this problem?
I wonder if its something they are lacking as they are eating dirt too or something they are not digesting properly.

Eating poo in t his case may be that they are still hungry and that the poo contains undigested food.

What happens if you give them more food (im guessing that they may poo more).

Either, the amount you are giving is too small, OR, and i think this is more likely.... part of the content of the food is not being digested, thus they may eat a fair bit but digest very little, and still be hungry.

In which case, a different food may be the answer.

They have food constantly available so they eat as and when hungary.  They are both good weights so I am not concerned it is lack of food or too much.

There could be strong flavourings in the PAH puppy food that make their poo smell/taste attractive. Try something like James Wellbeloved and see if they stop.

Was thinking of swapping them to a Wafcol wheat/gluten free as their poo does stink on this.
Is James Wellbeloved wheat/gluten free too?

Id stop free feeding for a start.

Even with one dog, its hard to tell how much they are actually eating, with two you have no idea how much each dog is getting.

JW is wheat gluten free and comes in about 4 different flavours. There are quite a few good quality foods out there that are wheat/gluten free. Just check the ingredients carefully. If it says anything like derivatives of animal or vegetable origin, avoid it as you don't know what they're using. And if it says something like 'with lamb & rice' avoid it as it's like when they say 'fruit juice drink' - it means it can have all sorts of other cheap stuff in there and a tiny amount of the actual ingredients mentioned.

My shar-pei makes a beeline for certain piles of dog poo yet ignores others when we're out for a walk. She only started eating poo when she had a litter of puppies and has never ate her own or that of my other dogs. I often wonder what people where I live must be feeding their dogs!

JWB is NOT GLUTEN FREE!! It contains barley which also has a gluten component :(  so if your dog has a problem with GLUTEN as opposed to Wheat Allergy, then this food will still make him ill :(

Burns Dog food contains no gluten products but it does contain oats which may affect the dog if it is a sensitive Coeliac (Gluten Intolerant) most dogs are fine tho ;)

Be careful how the food is labelled and the ingredients listed.  If it says wheat and gluten free then it will be safe for gluten intolerance.  If it says wheat gluten free then it won't be safe ;)
