Has anyone ever had to take their dogs to a show vet. My boy had to go on gundog day at Darlington as he hurt his back trying to seduce a girl in a cage at the ringside. He was given an injection of rimadoyl and a note for my own vet and that was £25. the vet made a comment about it being sunday to which I replied of he had been here on saturday he would have made a real dodgy looking collie!!!!  I have heard from friends about show vets ranging from costing for the medicine to having paid nothing. Anyone else had an experience?

I would expect to pay £25.00 at my own vets so it doesnt sound expensive to me.  On a sunday about treble that. Sorry.

A friend of mine does show vet at several shows. She charges cost of medicine (at cost price) and nothing for seeing the dog.

I had to take my dog to the vet at Midland counties show in Stafford.
He had an anal abcess which had burst. (it had grown inwards).
The vet treated the abcess, injected him with pain relief and antibiotics.
Also gave us a 7 day supply of antibiotic tablets.
Cost was about £5 for medication.

I saw the show vet at bournemouth and didnt get charged :)

Personally I would have been more concerned about giving Rimadyl than the £25.

It wasn't really the money, more the fact that he said it was sunday [what choice did I have but to go on sunday?] I have been told that show vets only charge for the medicine so thought that was a bit extreme for a little dose of rimadayl.

I got charged £48 + vat for a Sunday consultation with my vet....
Never had to go to a show vet so far (touching wood)

Consultation alone, on a normal day at my vets is £21!

Just got the bill in and it was £6.65 for the medicine and £19.04 for the consultation which took less than five mins and he still couldn't tell me what was wrong so I think it is a bit steep.

Nicky, my old vets used to charge me roughly £19.00 just for walking through the door on an ordinary day! I think you must have a very good (and cheap) vet if you think you were robbed by the show vet ;) Needless to say I've changed my vet :D

The question is not how much your vet charges :d

Let's face it, I bet they are paid a fare sum by the show so I would think that this was a bit expensive.  I went to one at South Wales a couple of years ago, for an eye infection that my dog got overnight whilst I was camping.  I can't remember how much it cost me now, but I think that I only paid for the mediction and nothing else.

I've been charged £14 for a vet just to look at my cat's eyes and find nothing wrong with them!   Must have been in the surgery for all of 2 minutes!

i had a health check on my older dog, and the vet didnt charge me anything!!!!! Even the head nurse was shocked!!!!!!! LMAO

Having seen Kai after he'd been to the vet I think that £25 was a cheap price. I'm sorry Nicky, but you did ask. :(

Nicky and I were at the same show, same breed. Kai seemed, to me, to be in a lot of pain and personally I'd pay any amount the vet asked to help him get home to my own vet. Taking foot out of mouth now, and ducking from the flak ;)

The thing is Linda , Kai was still the same after seeing that vet, it was only after I had been to Jim on monday morning [and he fitted me into his very busy day right away] that Kai was any better. I thought it was a lot to pay for something that didn't make him better and I still had to go to my own vet. Kai is now bouncing around like a loon again.I was only charged £15 for the consultation at my own vet plus his drugs. I though that this vet must be getting paid to be there and is making  agood profit for not a lot as he wouldn't tell me what was wrong as he wasn't my full time vet.

You may find that an extra dose of Rimadyl was needed to take any inflammation down fully around the area he hurt.  Rimadyl is a painkilling anti inflammatory and if his injury was severe I doubt one dose from whatever vet would have helped him, that's probably why you were advised to go to your vets the next day.

When Mia had her suspected broken elbow she had several days of Metacam to take to take down the inflammtion around the joint and even after that she wasn't 100% ok.   I was £107 for Mia to be x-rayed and dispensed with a bottle of Metacam!!!!!!!!!     I would see about taking Kai to a chiro too just to make sure he hasn't twisted anything that will give him problems later.

I had to see the vet at LKA last year - my boy was diagnosed with an ulcer in his eye and given drops and ointment - wasn't charged at the show or afterwards, must say I was surprised.
