How can I make my English Springer Spaniel heel on the lead she doesnt respond to treats as she dont want to eat them Ive tried keep stopping and saying heel to no avail,we use a halti please help make my walks more enjoyable!!
Hi stand your ground and dont walk no further until she comes back to your side as soon as she's gone the lenght of the lead and you can feel her on the end stop and dont move until she comes back, then when she does praise her they do soon get the hang of it. Instead of using treats you could use a toy and by the way halti's in my opinion encourage a dog to pull. Also you need to learn her to walk on a loose lead, walk a step then call her to your side and praise her everytime she follows you it sound simple but it is hard you've just got to praise at the right time. It will work be positive.
Warm regards Susan
thankyou I will try these things I have started walkin with her off the lead last little bit on way home and she doing okay with that so thought it may help with the lead,,we did have a harness when she was a puppy and my god she pulled then,so halti is better

You could try being more unpredictable :D :D
Seriously this really works :) Put your dog on a normal collar and lead (no halti) and find a safe space, like a car turning space or similar and as soon as your dog starts to move ahead (or wherever) change directions, go at right angles or turn around completely :) and just carry on walking, don't allow the lead to get longer by moving your arm away from your side and don't jerk the dogs neck with the lead ;) say your dogs name in an excited voice :D when you do this at first your dog will be a little confused but will soon start paying attention and walking beside you, when you can use your voice to praise or give a fave treat (liver snaps are good, from wilkinsons) Keep changing directions every few steps for a few minutes. Done properly this can start working within 10 minutes, but you will need to continue training for some weeks/months until your dog is reliable. The best part of this method is that the dog soon starts enjoying it as its fun :) and you can use it as a reminder if the dog has a lapse and 'forgets' about heeling :D :D :D
she was doing a bit of that in the prog on channel 4 Wednesday night
