i give my dog a dentastick every day but do i still ned to brush his teeth?, if so how often.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 19.09.05 16:35 UTC
Personally, I think that Dentasticks are a waste of money, and given how quickly my dogs have eaten them when I've had some freebies, I can't see that they can be very effective :) My dogs have a marrow bone about once a week (together with raw chicken wings and other meaty bones) and I never have to clean their teeth :)

it takes my dog about 5 minutes to eat one, is that long enough?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 19.09.05 16:40 UTC
I have no idea :D Perhaps there is someone here who uses them and can say whether they think that they are effective :D

mine eat them in under a minute..waste of money i think

I read the ingredients on these and didn't bother buying them, nor the new greenies, I fail to see what the ingredients are supposed to do for anyone's teeth and dogs are unlikely to be affected differently.

It does brilliantly for my Pom's whose teeth are just changing over as they can have a good chew at it.  Waste of time with my Spanish who can chomp through a big bone with the greatest of ease :d

crispy fish skins from CSJ dog foods are BRILLIANT at cleaning teeth! dogs love um ,but they are abit errr fishy! (well they are 100% fish)

My two absolutely love them, but eat them in a flash. I try to clean their teeth regularly with some toothpaste I got from the vets- obviously more expeny than that from the petshop, but my 5 yr old has pretty good teeth. They have rawhide chews everyday and{this is disgusting} I do try to de-plaque their teeth using my fingernail. MMM... lovely.. the vet showed me. Anyway, both sets of teeth are in good nick so the combination seems to be working..

I have just found a company selling dried fish and it has worked wonders on my dogs skin and teeth.
www.fish4dogs.com.

Hello, denta stix arn't cheap if you give them every day. why dont you use plaqueoff, that keeps teeth clean and last for ages for only about £10. my yrokie gets 1 year out of a tub. c ya x

Also, If anyone lives in the Manchester area and their dogs like dentastix you can buy 14 large sticks for 1 quid from Manchester Dog's Home- so there!

I feed mine on pigs ears as a treat every couple of days. As they take a while to eat it. My three year olds teeth are as white and clean as my 12 month youngster.
The denta rasks i've found personally are expensive and I would want to give one every day. I think it's more the gnawing action not the product

I give mine Dentastix every so often but more in the hope it may help the Yankee, who has bad breath thanks to constant scavenging! I brush their teeth in spite of the wriggling every few days, and whenever I notice a bit of tartar build up I scrape it off with a 5p piece (a trick I got from my breeder friend)!

Hi,
My one dog eats, marrow bones chews, hide bones,ect;
his teeth are fine, nice and white and clean, one of my bitches,
just will not eat, marrow bones, hide bones, only some mint chews.
and not very often, her teeth arn't so good.
I think as long as they are not just feed slops, or tinned dog meat on its own,
as that makes there gums soft and teeth yellow. Hard biscuites that
they have to chew, will help. I have found that dogs do not like there
teeth cleaned. If you Show them, they will object to the judge looking
in there mouth.[thinking the are going to clean there teeth] It causes a problem.
Regards
Denese

Mine love the dental chews.  Have to also say that they love having their teeth cleaned too!  Yes they are odd boys!  As soon as I get their teeth brushes out and tooth paste they both come and sit in the kitchen ready for me to give their teeth a scrub - bless they do look adorable!
- By ericarose [gb] Date 21.09.05 19:27 UTC
i give mine frageria....you can get drops to put in water or tabs....that dissolves plague..mine also have rasks  and mine are from 2years up to 13 years and all have all their teeth and white ....no problems...the seven year old has her teeth cleaned with toopaste occasionally as she has a crooked tooth and plaque will form if not carefull ......

I too use Fragaria, combined with a 1/2 measure of 'Plaque off' - works a treat - one of my toy poodles had the most discoulured teeth and the smelliest breath - not now .
- By carene [in] Date 24.09.05 21:30 UTC
Where do you get Fragaria and Plaque off, please?
- By Jane Dee [gb] Date 25.09.05 20:06 UTC
Hi

I bouhgt the 'Plaque Off' from the manufacturers stall at Crufts but this website does it : www.homoeopet.co.uk/plaqueoff

Fragaria is homeopathic, I use the ^c strength, their phone number is 01782 522867

Best of luck

Jane

i agree with Daisy , dental sticks are a waste of time .IMO the only things to keep their teeth clean are real bones ( raw )
- By bunty williams [gb] Date 08.11.05 19:49 UTC
Ok if raw bones suit your dog. One of my girls can't tolerate them- gets the runs!
- By ange [gb] Date 09.11.05 18:49 UTC
I saw a tip on TV the other day that I'm going to try. Put a plaster on your index finger then dip in Bicarbonate of Soda and just rub the plaster over the teeth. BTW my 2 love Dentastix but they're gone in no time at all so I'm sure they don't help with teeth cleaning.
