Hi, my new mini daschund is only 12 weeks old only had him for two weeks, he is fine in the day as someone is always in, and he will go off explore the house, and sleep in his bed no problem. However when it comes to bedtime he jus wont stop barkin! we have tried to leave him and be persistant however it doesn't seem to work! someone has to end up sleepin on the sofa in the same room as him. I have also tried to leave the radio on but this does not help!
Please can someone give me some advice?
Thanks
I think the secret is to be consistent in whatever approach you adopt. In his eyes, someone coming down and sleeping on the sofa with him means he has achieved his objective! That is - "hurrah! all my barking paid off tonight - must remember to do this tomorrow night as well!"
I find the best approach is to have a bedtime routine. I use a crate with my young puppies and will let them out for a piddle and poop, pop them in the crate with a little chew, cover the crate and tell them night night before turning off all the lights and heading to bed.
I will absolutely not respond to any whining or barking whatsoever. Of course, puppies of that age cannot manage a full night without the need to piddle. I will set my alarm for around 3am and, if all is quiet at that time, will go downstairs, tell them what a good puppy they are and let them out for a quick piddle and straight back to bed. If at 3am the puppy is making a noise then I wait for a couple of minutes of quiet before heading downstairs.
You may have a few nights of sleeplessness until he realises that barking achieves nothing - but it does work eventually!
Good Luck

I had exactly the same problem! What worked for me is getting a nice, comfy crate/cage. At night put his fave toys, water and a chewy bone in there for him and lock him in. Someone shouold stay there with him on the first few nights but get further away from the crate each time. I hope you consider uying one. - sophie
i always advise new puppy owners to use a crate too. this is a familiar place to them as they are usually born & raised in a crate or similar, from birth. i also recommend a hot water bottle wrapped with the blanket you get from breeder with mums scent on .stick with routine & your puppy should settle within the week .!! :)

my mini daschund is a long haired, black and tan
If a blanket with mum's scent on it is too hard to come buy, try some of *your* own clothes. I used old socks, and an old T-shirt that i would wear, give to pup, wash and wear again--around the house... (if it wasnt shredded) to give back to him.
My pup was never happy with a crate (a carboard box to be precise...), but i used the same pillow for his bed and carried that where ever i needed to make him feel at home... That was *his* pillow, cats need not apply...
And yes, never give into whining, it took about a week for him to get the idea that i wasnt going to pay attention... although one day while ignoring some persistant whining i began to smell something bad... guess he was trying to warn me (turned out he had an upset stomach, again and again)...
hi i have excatly the same type of puppy same age and everything. they like to know your there so under his bed when hes fallen asleep whilst in the room put a tick tock clock the puppy will think its your heartbeat

Welcome to Champdogs :) and sorry you lost one of your babies to Parvo but I think you should look at the dates of the postings as this one is from 3 years ago :) :)
