any tips on how to toilet train my 11 week old staffy girl pup . when the doors are open shes great goes outside does her buisness then comes back in which we were pleased as she has done this from the day we had her . however now its getting colder and the winter aproaches we dont want the doors open . on some ocasions with the door shut shes gone to toilet inside the house before we can pick her up . would it be a good idear to put newspaper by the back door and start that way ?

Take-her-out-often , don't rely on her knowing how to call you , you need to go to her and take her out every 30min-hour. She'll soon realize! Don't put down newspaper.

Hi Adam,

If you've been relying on her using the toilet outdoors simply because the door is always open so she has regular access, then the chances are that she is not actually house trained at all ;)  It's quite common, especially in warmer weather, for anyone training a pup to leave the back door open but it is still important to make a point of physically taking your puppy outside at regular intervals (after waking up, after meals, after games, roughly in maximum of 1 hour intervals) and using a command word such as "busy" as soon as she starts to eliminate.  Then immediately praise her and treat her if possible too.  If you do this vigilantly and vigorously over about the next week, you will find she has gotten the message :)

For your own sake as well as the pup's, don't resort to using newspaper - this will simply confuse her further.  The idea is to train her the only acceptable place to go is outside.  HTH, good luck Teri :)
