Hello
Ella recently picked up several tics which I have removed with a tic hook as I've found them (very difficult on a hairy black dog until they're big enough to feel) . I am almost positive that everything is out as they have been moving and wiggling their disgusting little heads around when they're out. There are however definite hard scabby lumps (very small but very noticable to the touch) where each tic was buried. I have cleaned these but should I do anything else or just leave them well alone. Ella is absolutely fine in every other way.
Thanks for any help.

You could treat her with Frontline just in case :)

Thank you Daisy. She was frontlined about a month ago and I have to say the tics were small and easy to remove so perhaps they would have fallen out anyway. I think I'll just keep an eye on the lumps and hopefully they'll just go away.
Best wishes

I clean them and put something like Savlon on and they usually just go away.

I would think it is just the body reacting to the saliva of the tic which alters the blood clotting agent. My dog allways has a lump under the skin after removal and it goes away by itself after about a week.

Is there Lyme disease where you are? I think dogs can get it, as well as you. VEry scary stuff.
Yes lymes disease is in the uk. My OH has had it twice now in the past 13 yrs :(
and dogs can get it.
I have read up about Lyme disease and am keeping good watch but I am positive these are sheep ticks which I think (maybe incorrectly) are not so dangerous. Incidentally I am sure she picked these up at the Birmingham show as that's the only place we've recently been where there could have been sheep.
Thanks for the replies.

Do you have hedgehogs in your garden? They're usually heavily infested with both fleas and ticks.

deer tics (Ixodes scapularis ) arnt just found on deer, although deer are the primary host, you could find them anywhere where deer may have wandered, including through a field of sheep. The tics feed on the deer get fat and then drop off and wait for the next passing thing wether its sheep, dogs or you, They dont mind if they are hungry they will feed on whatever/whoever is available.
You are more likely to pick them up in wooded areas aswell as fields with long grass especially.
But it is possible to pick them up else where.
ie Dog picks up tic in area deer have been, gets back in car goes home ( no one spotting tic on dog) a week or so later on a walk in local park tic falls off (full ) it hangs around til its hungry again ( could be 3 weeks) and crawls onto the next passing warm blooded meal ticket, and the next victim may never have been anywhere near deer area but has picked up a deer tic.
Although that scenario may not be that common ... its still possible, so i guess i'm saying remain vigilante in checking your dogs as you never know where other peoples doggys have been. :)
Thanks very much for that info, I had no idea. We have hedgehogs in the garden and walk in wooded areas every day so will be extra vigilant.
Best wishes

I have a reciepe for a natural flea tic fly repellant if your interested. made with essential oils.
I think it was posted on here by some kind person, i cant remember to be honest.... if it was then thanks go to who ever they were ( im sure they will own up :D )
I'm not sure how good it is as i havent got all the oils together yet, but it sure looks like it will smell good :D :D
