I have a three yr old Lab-cross and ever since he was a puppy we have taken part in socialisation classes and progressive training classes. Nature-wise he is 100%, couldn't wish of having a dog with a more 'sweeter' nature - in some ways, that is the problem! He loves other people and other dogs! Training classes he excells in and can do some lovely work BUT when we are out in the open with him, his power of concentration is poor and commands are hit and miss. He can justas easily run off and ignore recalls as obey them. What is upsetting is that he has only, in the last six months, started this 'running-off' business and usually, when there are other dogs to run to (but not always - as once he gets a strong smell he can keep going as well). Has anybody got any ideas on how to try and overcome this problem as I am starting to lose any confidence I had about lettig him off the lead. When there are no distractions he can be totally obedient, incredibly willing to please and very quick to pick things up.

Hi Tricia,
Best thing to do is to keep working on little, fun obedience exercises whilst out on walks, so that the dog understands that he still has to listen to you when he is outside. Build up slowly with distractions, but the no. 1 rule is prevention and being prepared. So, you will need to have him on a long line. Ask him to come back to you frequently during a walk (reward him for doing so with a little game) and slowly build this up with other dogs present. When his recall is back up to scratch, then you can let him off lead again.
If he is allowed to shoot off every time, then he will do it more and more.
All the best,
Patty
