Hi I have a 13week old puppy King charles called cookie.  I took him to vets to get last jag and told vet he is dragging backside she squeezed the glands at cookies backside and she was surprised that a little came out as he is so young.  However he has started to do this again is this normal...

Hi Jaxi has he been wormed, it could be his glands or worms.  They do empty there glands every time they go the toilet.  Whats his poos like they might not be hard enough when passing his glands which make them empty.

Warm regards Susan

hi susantwenty, Yes he has been wormed at 12 weeks.  The vet said that he should not need wormed again until 6mths.  Do you thinks I should worm him again.  His poos have nothing on them ....

Usually you worm puppies every month till they're 6 months, then every 3 months thereafter ...

Thanks for that.  My husband took him to the vet last time and he passed info on to me.  He probably picked up wrong info.  I will worm him again. Jaxi

You do worm him with wormers from the vet dont you?????
If not go get some, as if you get the ones from pet shops you may as well save your money and buy smarties instead for the use they are.

If he's a Cavalier, it's very common in the breed and responsible breeders are doing their best to sort it in their breeding plans.  A little bran sprinkled on his food may help.

My 6 month old Cavalier does this and like you when we take her to the vets to have her anal glands emptied, there is nothing in there.  She is wormed regularly.  She drags her bum probably 4 or 5 times a day, sometimes before a poo (which made me think perhaps it was helping her to "go") or sometimes after (which then made me think perhaps she was doing it to help clean her bum).  I have found from reading several Cavalier books that it is common in the breed, so we just leave her to it.  If it becomes increasingly persistant, we will take her back to the vets again, but other than that, we'll just have her anal glands emptied when we take her for annual booster or dew claws trimmed.

My Cavalier has this problem too, I just check them myself regularly and if we happen to be at the vets I get them to do it properly. You're lucky he has the sense to drag his bum - my idiot boy didn't show any signs of discomfort until the glands became infected and started oozing, and we had to go to the vet!!

I've had 2 Cavaliers and they both had terrible anal gland trouble and both ended up having them removed after repeated infections and blockages.

Hi Bev

Silly question but how do I know if they get infected?

If the dog hasn't already started dragging it's bottom to let you know they are uncomfortable, you may find the first sign is when the pus starts oozing out, that's what happened with my silly boy! Now I check him regularly! His father is the same. :-)

trust me  you will know ..(hope no one is eating) but one of my girls has just got over an anal gland abcess it was like a tennis ball.vet gave antibiotics and told me put on hot compress's if not realised in 24 hrs she had to go in for an operation

it was one of the worst things i have ever seen it burst and puss and blood ran everywhere......her glands were only done 4 weeks before...sorry for those munching a sarnie whilst reading this

When a pup or any dog does this, you should get some soft cotton wool,a good wedge, and if you are not able to empty the glands yourself, just wash the bottom with warm, not hot mild soapy water and then rinse repeatedly.Just actually doing this will sometimes get the glands heated enough to express on their own without exerting pressure..You may need to tie the dog up if there is no one to hold it.Then just towel dry gently by dabbing,or you can use tissues or kitchen rolls, but not the hard stiff types.Dogs just like humans can have mild itching (you know where) but unfortuantely there are no bidets, imagine going for weeks without a good wash!! We never just leave ours as the discomfort for them must be terrible, especially on the older dogs. Remember that itching is recognised in medical circles as a mild form of pain
