The German Shepherd Dog was incorrectly renamed the"Alsati
an Wolfdog"after WWI ,by the KC, due to the huge nationwide hatred of anything german(Dachshunds were stoned to death in the streets)Several military men(who were members of the KC) recalled seeing some of the breed with German troops in Alscae Lorraine(whose native inhabitants are called Alsati
ans & as the dogs had the same erect ears & similar heads to wolves they were erroniously called Alsati
an(Wolf Dog). The Wolf dog tag was dropped as this too lead to hatred of the breed as a direct wolf cross.
Eventually after many many attempts in 1977, at the KC members AGM, Raymond Oppenheimer(world famous Bull Terrier breeder/handler/judge)proposed the name should revert to the correct one & the KC in their wisdom appeased the "Alsati
anists"(their choise of title)by simply reversing the name from "Alsati
an(GSD) to GSD(Alsati
an). It would have been much better simply to remove the misnomer of"Alsati
an"& leave the breed with it's correct title of Deutsche Shaferhund(German Shepherd Dog)
