Hello,
can anyone help me? I have a dog which I would like to use as a stud dog. I would like to know if it it usual for the bitch to come and stay with me when I am studding him and for how long? also how many times shall I let him mount her? I read on one website that the pro-oestrus ans oestrus can last around 21days and that it isnt possible to tell exacley when she is fertile, so if you are not breeding with your bitch then you should keep her away from males for the whole three weeks. if that is true and you cant tell exacley when she is fertile then does that mean that the bitch will have to stay with me for three weeks? Do you breed her when she has stopped bleeding? can someone please help me thank you very much

Before you go any further Sarah, please read the first post on BREEDING section of the Forum.   You must be aware of what changes could occur in your dog once you use him at stud.

You do not state his breed - has he been shown and, most importantly, has he had all the relevent health tests for his breed?   A "health check" by a vet is not enough - you should contact your local breed society and ensure that all criteria for the breed are followed.

After you have done all that and if all is well, go back to your breeder and get some good solid advice on the mechanics of breeding.  It is not always simple.
